In New York City, Ash, Riz Ahmed is a discreet fixer who works as a bridge between whistleblowers and the powerful interests they expose. He brokers a payoff on behalf of Hoffman, Matthew Maher that brings McVie, Victor Garber, the CEO of Optimo, into a face-to-face confrontation. Hoffman, feeling the weight of McVie’s muscle, wavers about going public and ultimately hands over the incriminating documents, but warns that an anonymous Ash still holds a copy to safeguard his safety. From a nearby vantage, Ash makes sure Hoffman boards a train out of the city and quietly stores the duplicate materials in a Newark warehouse, alongside other client files he guards with care.

Sarah Grant, Lily James a determined whistleblower, has a tense meeting with an attorney and is quickly referred to Ash, who keeps his identity protected by a relay-service setup. She is targeted by Cybo Sementis Research Institutes, a corporation trying to bury the dangerous side effects of their genetically modified wheat, and the pressure to silence her becomes relentless. The company’s counterintelligence squad, led by Dawson, Sam Worthington, closes in, with Rosetti, Willa Fitzgerald, Ryan, J Jared Abrahamson, and Lee, Pun Bandhu, assisting the pursuit. They trace Ash’s communications to the Tri-State Relay Service, but legal constraints prevent them from accessing call logs, keeping the trail frustratingly elusive.

Ash agrees to facilitate the safe return of Sarah’s report while maintaining strategic leverage. He outfits Sarah with burner phones, a passcode, and a discreet plan, then travels with her to Pittsburgh under the duo’s cover. While under surveillance, Sarah mails two packages: one is intentionally misdirected to Oklahoma, and the other carries the actual report along with a cash deposit that slips past the watchers and lands with Ash, strengthening the hold he has over the situation.

Ash—whose past includes a battle with alcohol—adopts the persona of a bicycle courier and begins attending AA meetings with his sponsor, Wash, Eisa Davis. He also brings in a skilled forger to craft a new identity for Sarah, opening a path for her to disappear if needed, while Hoffman’s voicemail and check-ins reveal a growing guilt about having endangered lives by letting Optimo’s crimes evade consequences.

As the countdown to the merger intensifies, Ash arranges a dead drop for the documents Sarah neglected to send and threads a narrow path through a widening maze of danger. The plan depends on keeping the leverage he’s built while avoiding Dawson’s team, who are determined to seize the material before the deal goes through. When the handoff moment finally arrives at a symphony hall, a dangerous gambit unfolds. Ash rushes to keep Sarah safe as Dawson closes in, and in a climactic sequence, he seizes control of the situation by triggering the hall’s fire alarm to create a window of escape. He reveals his true name to Sarah and helps her board a train, only to be pulled back into the fray as Dawson makes a captive hold on Sarah and demands the documents. Ash fights to break free, even as the group is forced to retreat in a tense pursuit that ends with Ash surrendering to the surveillance van.

At the Newark warehouse, a dramatic confrontation erupts. Dawson, Sarah, and Ryan close in on Ash, while Lee is pushed from a moving vehicle and knocked away. Sarah, who emerges as the orchestrator of the operation, reveals that Optimo’s true target was Ash all along. A dramatic distraction—produced by a carefully planned failsafe—lets Ash slip away with a gun in hand, and a car accident briefly halts the pursuit. Wash arrives with the police, and the fates of the primary pursuers are sealed: Dawson, Sarah, and Ryan are arrested, Rosetti escapes, and Ash, battered but unbroken, chooses not to abandon Sarah or the larger truth.

In the aftermath, Ash offers to hand the documents over to Wash—the one person he truly trusts—before quietly resuming his life on the move. Sometime later, he mails most of the $500,000 payoff to the Tri-State Relay Service and boards a train as news breaks about Optimo’s crimes, leaving his future shrouded in ambiguity but his resolve intact: he has faced the costs of silence, and the struggle to expose what’s hidden continues.
