Carlos is a bank executive who lives with his wife Marta and their children Marcos and Sara. [Marcos] brings a soccer ball with an autograph on it, hoping to prove to his friends that the signature is real. After starting the car, an anonymous call is left on a phone inside the car, warning that a bomb has been placed under each seat and will explode if anyone leaves their seat. The devices will be deactivated only after [Carlos] transfers a large sum of money into the caller’s account.
Carlos tries to figure things out near the school. Some kids gather to see the autographed ball, but he cannot let Marcos step out, or his friends will think he’s lying. He contacts a coworker, who confirms the caller has also reached them. The two men talk in their respective cars, blocking traffic as they negotiate. While [Carlos] drives away, someone in his coworker’s car steps out and that vehicle explodes. He watches the flames in horror as the stranger orders him to drive off quickly. Marcos is injured in the blast, and [Carlos] wants to rush him to the hospital, but the caller insists that the money be transferred first.
He phones [Marta] and tells her what is happening, instructing her to go to the bank and move funds into the caller’s account. [Carlos] sits in his car near the bank while Marta arrives with another person. The police and a bomb squad isolate him, and he is told he must release Marcos and Sara, though he still believes they are in danger. After negotiations with the authorities, they discover there is only a bomb in the front two seats. Marcos is evacuated, but Sara remains in the front seat, unwilling to abandon her father.
Later, a past client named Lucas visits, claiming to be [Carlos]’s brother Pablo. Lucas reveals that he was the one extorting money over the phone, having manipulated [Carlos] into paying after persuading him that his wife had been driven to suicide by bad investments. Lucas leaves, but then begins talking on the phone again, explaining that a separate bomb will go off unless [Carlos] escapes to a new location where more money can be sent within five minutes.
[Sara] and [Carlos] hastily flee, despite orders from the authorities, until they reach a dock where Sara reluctantly agrees to leave for her safety. Lucas returns and explains himself again, and [Carlos] decides to drive the car into the water to escape the explosion. After plunging into the sea and being resuscitated by paramedics, he is later laid off from his bank job. On the phone with a new employee in his previous managerial role, he discusses a business opportunity, and he ends the call after the caller emphasizes how important family is to a business.
