Wealthy American businessman Jack Moore (Richard Gere) travels to China to broker a satellite communications deal as part of a joint venture with the Chinese government. But before the deal can be sealed, he is framed for the murder of a powerful Chinese general's daughter, and the contract is awarded to his rival, Gerhardt Hoffman (Ulrich Matschoss).

Moore's court-appointed attorney Shen Yuelin (Bai Ling) initially doubts his claims of innocence, yet the two partners steadily uncover evidence that not only clears Moore but also implicates high-level figures in the Chinese central government. As the investigation deepens, a broad web of conspiracy and corruption within the state machinery comes into view, testing their resolve and trust.

Shen manages to persuade several senior officials to release documents that establish Moore's innocence. With this damning proof, Moore is quickly released from prison and the conspirators who framed him are arrested, marking a tangible victory for justice in a tense political environment.

At the airport, Moore asks Shen to leave China with him, but she decides to stay. The case has opened her eyes to injustices she had not fully understood, and she admits that meeting Moore has changed her life and that she now regards him as family. They share a heartfelt hug on the runway as Moore departs for America.
