Rose is treated for the cyst and returns home. She later marries the policeman whose finger she bit, starting a new chapter away from the Hillyer household. The path she follows reflects a search for stability and belonging.

Back in 1971, Buddy reveals that Rose married three more times and finally found happiness with her last husband, with whom she lived for 25 years. The family learns that she had died in the previous week, yet Buddy is told that Rose’s spirit will live on in their hearts. The narrative closes by honoring her lasting presence.
