Rosie, 13, is placed in a juvenile lockup and recounts her life: orphaned, she lives with 27‑year‑old Irene, who is secretly her mother, and Irene’s brother Michel, an unemployed gambler. When Irene begins a romance with Bernard, Rosie feels neglected and pours her hopes into a crush on Jimi, a boy she meets on a bus. Their escapades land her in detention, and Jimi never answers her letters.
