Rambling Rose

In 1971, a grown Buddy, John Heard, returns to his former family home and reflects on his youth during The Great Depression, when Rose, Laura Dern, came to live with the Hillyers as a domestic servant. Rose quickly finds admiration for Mrs. Hillyer, a diligent woman working on her master’s thesis who was orphaned at a young age, just as Rose had been. Rose also develops a quiet crush on the warm, paternal Mr. Hillyer, Robert Duvall. The three Hillyer children and Mr. Hillyer become aware of this, while Mrs. Hillyer remains oblivious, partly because she is hard of hearing and relies on an early hearing aid.

The household hinges on the fragile balance of affection, loyalty, and secrecy. Among the children, Frances “Dolly” Hillyer, Lisa Jakub, is one of the youngest and the dynamics of care, attention, and longing within the family come into sharper focus. The attending doctor, Dr. Martinson, Kevin Conway, notes her rugged resilience and unconventional background, which challenges the Hillyers’ assumptions about guilt and merit. After convalescing, Rose returns home and continues to navigate her fragile position within the family. She ultimately marries the policeman who had become part of her narrative, Dave Wilkie, Robert John Burke, but the story does not end there.

Back in the present, Buddy unveils that Rose went on to marry three more times and eventually found happiness with her last husband, living with him for 25 years. When Buddy seeks counsel from his father, Mr. Hillyer reveals that Rose died the previous week. The elder Hillyer consoles him with a lasting truth: Rose lives on forever in their hearts, a testament to the indelible mark she left on a family shaped by hardship, memory, and a complicated tenderness that refused to fade.

Throughout the narrative, the Hillyer household remains a place of eccentric charm and hidden pain, where affection, longing, and consequences intertwine. Rose’s early presence lingers as a reminder of how a single life can ripple through a family’s history, shaping their memories and their sense of what it means to endure and endure again.
