Gowri [Indraja] returns to her ancestral village, Thulasipatti, to visit her paternal uncle Pannaiyar [Janagaraj], a wealthy landlord known for his influence and affluence. At the same time, Raja [Vijay], a humble and hardworking farm laborer, lives in the same village with ambitions of studying hard to secure a better future through a stable job. Their paths cross unexpectedly during a village event, leading to a humorous misunderstanding. When Raja answers a challenging riddle in a comedic manner, Gowri’s aunt misinterprets his response as an insult, prompting her to send hired goons to intimidate him. But Raja, demonstrating courage and quick wit, successfully defends himself, earning a cautious respect from the villagers.
Despite this rocky start, Raja makes an apology to Pannaiyar, which begins to soften Gowri’s initial judgment of him. She starts to see a different side of Raja, appreciating his sincerity and decent nature. As she attempts to build a friendship with him, Raja remains distant, seemingly hesitant to reciprocate her feelings, perhaps scarred from previous heartbreaks. Meanwhile, Gowri develops a warm bond with Raja’s mother, Rasamma [Vadivukarasi], who works diligently on Pannaiyar’s farm and shares her warmth and kindness with Gowri.
A pivotal moment occurs at a lively village festival when Raja heroically rescues Gowri’s close friend Shenbagam from a group of angry goons. This act of bravery significantly deepens Gowri’s affection for him, yet Raja continues to keep his distance. His aloofness stems from a painful past—a tragic love story involving his best friend Chandru [Ajith Kumar], who fell in love with a woman named Shanthi [Charu Haasan]. Raja had helped Chandru meet Shanthi, but societal and familial pressures forced her to marry another man. Heartbroken, Chandru ultimately took his own life, leaving Raja haunted by guilt and distrust concerning love’s promises.
This personal tragedy cements Raja’s belief that love can lead to pain, causing him to push Gowri away even as she confesses her feelings. Despite her persistent efforts, Raja refuses to believe in happiness or romantic devotion. Feeling defeated, Gowri decides to leave the village, but during her farewell visit to Raja’s house, an accidental incident causes her minor burns on her legs. Raja, overwhelmed with guilt, rushes to her side, apologizing earnestly, which prompts Gowri to finally admit her love for him. Her heartfelt declaration breaks down Raja’s emotional barriers, and he reciprocates.
However, their budding relationship faces fierce opposition from Gowri’s aunt, who disapproves of Raja’s lower social standing compared to Gowri. The situation escalates as Gowri’s father, Rajasekaran, [Kumarimuthu] plans to marry her off to someone else, fearing losing his daughter and worried about her safety. Gowri, frantic and desperate, returns to the village seeking her uncle Pannaiyar’s help. Despite initial resistance, Pannaiyar agrees to support her, and Rasamma reluctantly accepts Gowri as Raja’s partner. But just as things seem to settle, Rajasekaran arrives with his own set of aggressive intentions.
When Rajasekaran brutalizes Rasamma and Pannaiyar, Raja intervenes, fighting off the goons and defending Gowri’s honor. In the chaos, Rajasekaran humiliates Raja’s family by taunting their poverty and insisting on his daughter’s future. His anger reaches a boiling point when he burns Raja’s humble hut, where Gowri rushes in to save a cherished photograph of Raja, with Raja following closely to ensure her safety. This heroic act acts as a turning point, prompting Rajasekaran to reflect on his actions. Finally, he admits his mistakes, offers an apology to his brother (Pannaiyar), and accepts Gowri’s love for Raja.
With all the misunderstandings and obstacles cleared, Gowri and Raja are finally able to unite, symbolizing love’s triumph over societal barriers and personal past traumas. Their story exemplifies resilience, hope, and the enduring power of genuine affection in the face of adversity.
