A shy, eccentric college teacher is repeatedly pranked by his friends, who send him letters supposedly from a girl. As he becomes emotionally attached to the imagined correspondent, his attempts to meet her repeatedly fail. When he finally encounters her in person, he discovers she has never heard of him, driving the film’s central conflict.
