On a rain-soaked night in Chicago, police officer Sharon Pogue finds herself at a tragic traffic accident, desperately urging one of the victims to hold on and fight for his life. Fast forward a year, and Sharon is grappling with her tumultuous dating life while facing estrangement from her family after having her father arrested for domestic abuse against her mother, Josephine (Sonia Braga). Her tumultuous relationship with her father and brother, Larry (Jeremy Sisto), has left emotional scars that are beginning to cloud her judgment and performance as an officer.
Meanwhile, a man named Catch roams the streets of Chicago, seemingly in a trance, performing good deeds for those around him. One fateful day, he spots Sharon at a diner and observes her from a distance, a moment that quickly turns into chaos as a car pulls up and unleashes a torrent of bullets into the establishment. Amidst the chaos, Sharon pursues one of the assailants, but in a moment of desperation, the criminal wrests her gun from her and prepares to deliver a fatal blow. Yet, Catch intervenes, heroically saving her life in the nick of time.
That night, an encounter at a tavern leads to an awkward yet heartfelt connection between Sharon and Catch, culminating in a kiss that leaves Sharon bewildered when he abruptly leaves. The next day, she finds a dandelion taped to her mailbox, bearing Catch’s phone number, and reaches out to invite him to breakfast, only to later back out of their plans, unaware that Catch is already waiting at the coffee shop. Frustrated by being stood up, Catch confronts Sharon, leading her to discover more about his enigmatic life, yet he remains tight-lipped, only revealing he’s starting “from scratch.”
Heeding his mother-in-law’s advice, Catch reaches out to apologize, allowing their relationship to flourish. Their connection deepens through picnics by the lake and intimate moments, creating a sanctuary where both can heal. As they enjoy a night at a blues club, Catch surprises everyone by picking up a trumpet and playing a soulful rendition of “Nature Boy,” drawing unexpected attention from the club owner, who calls him “Steve Lambert.” Confused, Catch denies any familiarity.
Determined to uncover the truth, Sharon investigates the name “Steven Lambert” and finds out he was the man whose hand she held during the tragic accident a year prior, realizing that Catch’s wife and child were lost in that heartbreaking incident. Wanting to aid Catch in his healing process, she tries to broach the topic of his family, even taking him to their graves, but he becomes distraught and leaves.
In an attempt to understand him better, Sharon seeks counsel from Catch’s mother-in-law, who suggests that healing takes time. At her parents’ wedding vow renewal, Sharon attempts to reconcile with her estranged father, prompting tender memories of childhood that begin to bridge the gap between them, but he remains emotionally distant.
Ultimately, Catch finds the courage to visit the cemetery, finally reconnecting with his past by speaking to his wife and child. As Sharon departs the ceremony, she is met with the sight of Catch waiting for her by her car. They share an emotional embrace and confess their love for one another, marking a new chapter in their intertwined lives. As they prepare to leave, Catch offers to take the wheel, symbolizing hope and a shared journey ahead.
