The story centers on Raji, a young woman who becomes a prostitute after losing her parents and shouldering the responsibility of raising her younger brother Sudhakaran. Circumstances and a lack of marketable skills push her into a life on the margins, and she ends up sharing a cramped life in a slum with Mariyaamma Chedathi and a cycle-rickshaw driver named Damu, who acts as her pimp.
Two college-going youngsters, Babu and Jayan, along with a school teacher, Chandran, become the men in her orbit. Babu is a diligent student who resides in a nearby hostel, and Raji gradually becomes a regular presence at his flat. Despite her frequent visits, Babu, wary of his own reputation, repeatedly tries to drive her away. Raji confesses her love for him but insists that she does not want a sexual relationship, fearing that it would reduce him to just another customer. Yet she persuades him to let her sleep on the floor at his place, gently rebuffing his romantic advances. News of their supposed bond spreads, and many misinterpret it as a simple customer-prostitute arrangement.
Raji’s younger brother Sudhakaran forms a teacher–student bond with Chandran, a relationship that will soon be tested. One day a beggar steals Chandran’s wristwatch through an open window. Sudhakaran is arrested by the police because he is a frequent visitor to Chandran’s room and becomes the prime suspect. He endures a brutal beating while in custody and dies soon after his release. When the real thief is later apprehended, Chandran feels the sting of guilt and question about whether his hasty judgment contributed to the boy’s death. In a gesture of remorse, Chandran offers money to Raji, but she rejects both the money and any forgiveness that might feel transactional.
Meanwhile, Babu’s father, Karunakaran, plans a marriage alliance for his son with Radha, the daughter of Lakshmi’s brother. Karunakaran, Damodaran, and Radha visit Babu’s hostel room and are shocked to find Raji there, merely a visitor in Babu’s company. They jump to the conclusion that the two are intimate. Damodaran, ashamed and angry, ends the engagement and Radha is married off to another man.
[Jayan]’s life takes a darker turn due to heavy drinking, and he dies from liver-related complications. On his deathbed, he urges Babu not to abandon Raji, arguing that her love for him is pure even if society deems it impure. In a brutal turn of events, Raji is gang-raped, but Chandran arrives just in time to intervene and save her. This act becomes a turning point, and Raji begins to forgive Chandran.
Babu’s mother becomes convinced of her son’s denials of any impropriety with Raji and ultimately meets both Babu and Raji. She sympathizes with Raji after learning about her difficult past and her son’s unwavering attachment. Lakshmi, seeing the bond and the humanity in the situation, accepts Raji as her daughter-in-law and brings her into the family, and gradually even Babu’s father comes to accept Raji as part of the household. The narrative closes on a somber but hopeful note, underscoring themes of resilience, social stigma, forgiveness, and the possibility of new beginnings within a fractured family.
