Pipsqueak, a lively hamster, finds herself in a bit of trouble when her owner, Katie, scolds her for attempting to create a card. Misunderstood, Pipsqueak's innocent efforts lead to a chaotic mess that surprises her owner. After a flustered Katie leaves the room, a magical shooting star emerges above their home, captivating Pipsqueak and drawing her into the enchanting Zhuniverse.
In this new world, Pipsqueak encounters a variety of quirky companions, including Mr. Squiggles, a brown hamster, Num Nums, a grey hamster, and Chunk, a white hamster. Sharing her predicament with them, she learns about their unique backstories: Chunk became separated from his owner after an adventurous surfing trip, while Num Nums was left behind when his owner moved to a pet-free apartment. Mr. Squiggles reveals that he once lived in a pet store until he made his daring escape.
As the quartet sets off toward the palace of the wizard Zhu Fu, they are joined by a scheming skunk named Stinker, who claims he can guide them to find Zhu Fu, the one who might help Pipsqueak return home. However, as they arrive at the palace, they find it devoid of the “happy hams” Stinker promised. Instead, he insists that they lie within the palace. To their surprise, the entrance—adorned with mysterious carved symbols—only opens when the symbols linked to each hamster start to glow.
Upon entering, the hamsters are met by a deceptive figure who transforms from the wizard Zhu Fu into the sinister lizard-like creature named Mazhula. It becomes evident that she has captured Zhu Fu and fortified herself by enslaving numerous hamsters to harness magical energy. Stinker, it turns out, has been an unwitting accomplice, luring helpless hamsters to Mazhula's trap.
After a narrow escape, the hamsters finally encounter the genuine Zhu Fu, who clarifies that Mazhula's strength stems from a powerful urn fed by her captivated slaves. In a bid to weaken her, the hamsters devise a plan to fill the urn with a sticky material, preventing Mazhula from drawing any energy. However, when she attempts to confront the hamsters, she finds herself drained of power. Furious upon returning to her throne, Mazhula discovers the urn now brimming with carrot paste. Following the clever insistence of Mr. Squiggles, Zhu Fu banishes Mazhula to the pet store where she originally imprisoned him.
As their adventure comes to a close, Pipsqueak expresses her deep longing for Katie and learns she has the ability to return home by summoning the star that brought her to the Zhuniverse. After heartfelt farewells to her friends Num Nums, Mr. Squiggles, and Chunk, Pipsqueak reclaims her place back home.
In a touching reunion, Katie embraces Pipsqueak after searching tirelessly for her. Just as joy fills the air, Pipsqueak's friends unexpectedly appear at the windowsill, having been sent by Zhu Fu to accompany her. Overjoyed, Katie welcomes her three new pets, excitedly heading to the kitchen to whip up some snacks for them, completing a delightful tale of friendship, adventure, and returning home.
