In a quiet, solitary world, a lonely widow who longs for a child is given a barley seed by a friendly witch. When she plants it, the seed grows into a flower, and from inside emerges a tiny girl. The old woman names her Thumbelina and raises her with great care, treating her as the daughter she always wanted. Thumbelina adores her mother, but she also yearns for companionship that matches her size. The story follows her delicate life as she learns to navigate a world that is often much larger than she is.
One night, the fairy prince Cornelius hears Thumbelina sing and discovers her. He becomes the first person near her own size that she has met, and a tender bond blossoms into love. The two share a magical ride on Cornelius’ bumblebee and deepen their connection as they dream about a future together. Yet their happiness is threatened when Mrs. Toad, enchanted by Thumbelina’s singing, kidnaps her to join a traveling troupe and to marry her son Grundel.
Thumbelina is rescued by Jacquimo, a witty swallow with a knack for getting into mischief and trouble alike. Meanwhile, Cornelius journeys back to the Vale of the Fairies to request that his parents delay winter as long as possible, hoping to give Thumbelina time, but they can only buy a single extra day. Grundel becomes aware that Thumbelina has escaped and sets out to find her. On her way home, Thumbelina encounters Berkeley Beetle, a pop singer who promises to guide her if she sings at his Beetle Ball. She reluctantly agrees, but during the performance her disguise slips away and she is publicly labeled ugly, leaving Beetle to reject her.
Beetle’s role grows murky as Grundel coaxes him into further misdeeds: Beetle hints that Grundel should capture Cornelius to lure Thumbelina away, and Grundel goes so far as to remove Beetle’s wings to ensure his cooperation. As winter arrives, Jacquimo is injured, and Cornelius slips and freezes in a pond. Beetle locates Cornelius and delivers him to Grundel, while Thumbelina, desperate and frightened, finds shelter in an old shoe and is eventually discovered by Grundel, who shelters her in the underground home of his neighbor Miss Fieldmouse. Miss Fieldmouse introduces Thumbelina to her boss and neighbor Mr. Mole, who has hired Grundel to capture Thumbelina so he can win her for himself and forget her love for Cornelius. Overwhelmed by the sense of loss, Thumbelina contemplates Mr. Mole’s proposal, but before the wedding can proceed, Jacquimo revives and vows to find Cornelius.
Meanwhile, Beetle learns of Thumbelina’s impending wedding and warns Grundel, who fires Beetle for allegedly killing Cornelius before capturing him. Thumbelina’s world spins toward a conflict as Cornelius’ fate hangs in the balance. A twist of fate brings a trio of friendly insect children who thaw Cornelius back to life, and the time of the wedding becomes a turning point. At the ceremony, Thumbelina can no longer marry Mr. Mole, remembering the love she shared with Cornelius. Grundel arrives to disrupt the union, sparking a chase, and Cornelius arrives to join the struggle, leading to a dramatic fall into a hole.
Thumbelina seizes a chance to escape on a pile of Mr. Mole’s treasure, causing chaos for the wedding guests. Jacquimo locates the Vale of the Fairies and carries Thumbelina there, where she and Cornelius are reunited. In a magical moment, Thumbelina grows her own wings upon accepting Cornelius’ proposal and their kiss, and they marry beside the fairy court. The newlyweds depart on Cornelius’ bumblebee, with Jacquimo and Thumbelina’s mother joining the celebration, along with the three insect children.
In the epilogue, Beetle resumes his pop career after his wings regrow, Grundel survives the fall with a broken leg and ends up falling in love with a female toad, much to his mother’s delight, and Mr. Mole marries Miss Fieldmouse. The tale closes with a sense of unexpected friendship, as the rabbit and fox Jacquimo had once sought help from ultimately find friendship with him.
This adaptation features a notable cast, including Rachel King and Gennie Nevinson in supporting roles, bringing depth and charm to Thumbelina’s enchanted world.
