The whole story of Press Play (2022) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Laura is introduced to her friend Chloe's stepbrother, Harrison, who works at a record store called Lost & Found. Their connection is instant, and they decide to attend a concert by Japanese Breakfast together. During their time together, they meet Cooper, the record store owner, and share a special moment at the beach where Harrison gifts Laura a cassette aimed at creating a mixtape that symbolizes their bond. The pair celebrate the news of Laura’s acceptance into an art mentorship program, but Harrison expresses his intention to move across the country for medical school. This moment is cut short when an earthquake occurs.

Back at Laura's home, she shares her artwork with Harrison, but his parents break the news that he is set to embark on his medical journey. In a heartfelt moment, Harrison confides in Laura that he wishes to stay behind for her, but she encourages him not to sacrifice his dreams for their relationship. They attend Laura's art exhibition together, marking a milestone in their young lives. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes on Harrison's birthday when he is tragically killed by a car, leading Laura to destroy their mural in grief and leave her mixtape at Lost & Found.

Fast forward four years, and Laura finds herself at Chloe's wedding, where Cooper unexpectedly returns her mixtape. When she listens to it, Laura discovers that pressing play transports her back to moments spent with Harrison, starting with their first date at the concert. Each play offers her a brief visit to the past, during which she attempts to warn Harrison about the circumstances that lead to his untimely death. She forewarns him about a calamity that’s about to happen at the beach, successfully predicting the earthquake.

However, her actions begin to ripple through time. Laura learns that her interference has altered the present, as Chloe is now married to someone entirely different than her soulmate. Soon, she uncovers that Harrison died after falling off a cliff in her timeline. As she continues her journey through time, she goes back to the moment she revealed her artwork to Harrison, where she tries to get him to heed her warnings about avoiding the cliffs. Upon returning, she discovers that his demise was a result of electrocution.

Her next excursion takes her to a gathering at Lost & Found, but the timeline has already shifted — the store has burned down with Harrison inside, and the mixtape is now missing. In search of answers, she meets a despondent Cooper and retrieves the cassette from this altered timeline. Cooper expresses skepticism about whether she is meant to save Harrison, yet she is determined to try. Unfortunately, her efforts lead to another tragic outcome: this time, Harrison and his father die in a car accident.

Refusing to give up, Laura presses play again and arrives at her art exhibition, where she advises Harrison to break up with her in favor of pursuing his medical career. In her present time, her calls to Harrison go unanswered, leading her to seek solace in the mixtape once again. She finds herself at the moment they completed their mural, where Harrison reveals he would rather stay with her than leave and face the inevitable.

Eventually, Laura realizes she must accept the reality that being with Harrison may not be possible. While at Chloe's, she discovers an additional song on the B-side of the cassette, which mysteriously allows her to return to the moment they were to meet for the first time. Choosing to save his life, she resolves not to enter Lost & Found. In the present, a joyful Chloe invites Laura to join her for Christmas dinner, revealing that she is now with her true soulmate. Harrison arrives at the gathering and introduces himself to Laura, suggesting that their paths are fated to cross anew.

Press Play Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Press Play (2022): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

How does the mixtape transport Laura back in time?

When Laura presses play on the cassette Harrison made for her, she is momentarily pulled back into the specific memory tied to each song, allowing her to physically relive key moments from her relationship. The mechanism is never fully explained, but the tape functions as both a time device and an emotional anchor, only activating the memories directly connected to their shared past. Each track corresponds to a different chapter of their relationship, which is why her interventions ripple through the broader timeline rather than staying isolated to one moment.

Foreshadowing: Harrison giving Laura the blank cassette at the beach to build their mixtape together is framed as a romantic gesture, but it later becomes the literal vehicle for time travel.

Q2

Why does Harrison die in different ways each time Laura changes the past?

Each timeline Laura creates shifts the chain of events leading up to Harrison's death, which is why no two attempts produce the same outcome. In the original timeline he is hit by a car, in another he falls off a cliff, in another he is electrocuted, and in another he perishes in a fire at the record store. The film's logic treats death as a constant in Harrison's fate rather than a single event, meaning that removing one cause simply allows another to take its place.

Q3

Why does Laura tell Harrison to break up with her?

After multiple failed attempts to keep Harrison alive while staying close to him, Laura concludes that her very relationship with him is the source of the danger. By urging him to leave her and pursue medical school on the other side of the country, she tries to remove the geographic and emotional connection that keeps pulling him toward the fatal accidents. It is a sacrifice meant to save his life by separating them entirely.

Q4

What happens to Chloe's marriage when Laura alters the timeline?

Chloe's soulmate changes depending on which version of events Laura creates, and in at least one altered timeline Chloe ends up married to a completely different man. This detail reveals that Laura's interventions do not just affect Harrison but ripple outward to reshape the lives of everyone connected to them. It is one of the clearest signals in the film that changing the past comes with collateral damage beyond the couple.

  • timeline consequences

Q5

What is the B-side song on the mixtape and how does it work?

The B-side song appears only after Laura has accepted that her previous interventions cannot save Harrison, functioning as a final, hidden track on the cassette. Unlike the other songs that send her back to moments already lived, this track transports her to the very first meeting she and Harrison were supposed to share. It gives her the unique ability not just to revisit the past but to alter the foundational moment that started everything.

Foreshadowing: Harrison's gesture of leaving a blank side on the cassette for Laura to fill mirrors the eventual appearance of an unexpected B-side track that she did not know was there.

  • hidden track

Q6

Why does Cooper return the mixtape to Laura at Chloe's wedding?

Cooper had been keeping the cassette at Lost & Found ever since Laura abandoned it there in the aftermath of Harrison's death. Returning it at Chloe's wedding places the tape back in Laura's hands during an emotionally open moment, surrounded by reminders of love and loss. Cooper does not explain his timing, but the gesture functions as a catalyst that restarts Laura's grieving process and gives her a second chance to process her pain.

  • Cooper

  • Chloe wedding

Q7

Why does Laura destroy the mural after Harrison dies?

The mural was the last collaborative artwork Laura and Harrison created together, and its existence kept their shared memory painfully visible. Destroying it is Laura's way of trying to sever her connection to the loss, even though doing so cannot erase what she feels. The act mirrors her decision to leave the mixtape behind at Lost & Found, both gestures representing her attempt to run from the grief rather than face it.

Foreshadowing: Harrison and Laura framing the mural as something that will outlast them makes its destruction feel like Laura is actively dismantling a promise.

Q8

How does Harrison survive at the end of Press Play?

Laura realizes that every attempt to save Harrison within their existing relationship has failed, so she uses the B-side song to travel back to the moment they were originally supposed to meet at Lost & Found. Instead of entering the record store and sparking their relationship, she walks away, preventing the entire chain of events that led to his death. In the new present, Harrison arrives at Chloe's Christmas dinner alive and reintroduces himself to Laura, suggesting a fated second meeting.

  • ending explained
  • Harrison alive

Q9

Why does the record store burn down in one of the timelines?

In the altered timeline where Laura warns Harrison at the Lost & Found gathering, the store catches fire and Harrison dies inside it. The fire is a direct consequence of her interventions shifting the sequence of events that day, replacing his original car accident with a new catastrophe. It reinforces the film's rule that removing one cause of death only opens the door for another.

  • Lost and Found fire
  • record store
  • alternate timeline

Q10

What does the cassette symbolize in Press Play?

The cassette functions as a physical vessel for memory, holding both the songs Laura and Harrison shared and the moments of their relationship tied to each track. It also represents the tension between holding on and letting go, since the object allows Laura to revisit the past but never permanently change it. By the end of the film, the cassette becomes less about time travel and more about Laura finally processing her grief rather than escaping it.

  • cassette symbolism
  • memory
  • grief
  • nostalgia
  • mixtape meaning
Q11

Why does Laura encourage Harrison to leave for medical school?

Even before the time travel begins, Laura tells Harrison not to give up his medical school opportunity just to stay with her. She does not want to be the reason he sacrifices a career he has worked toward, and she believes their relationship is strong enough to survive distance. Her encouragement foreshadows the film's later argument that staying close to her may itself be the thing that puts him in danger.

Foreshadowing: This early conversation about ambition versus love becomes the blueprint for Laura's eventual decision to ask Harrison to break up with her as a way to save his life.

  • medical school
  • sacrifice
  • ambition
  • Laura encouragement
  • long distance
Q12

How does Laura's final choice break the cycle of failed timelines?

Every previous intervention tried to save Harrison while still preserving their relationship, but each attempt simply produced a new fatal scenario. Laura breaks the cycle by accepting that their love story in its original form cannot survive, and by stepping aside at the moment they were supposed to meet. Removing herself from the equation prevents the cascade of events that always led to his death, which is the only change powerful enough to rewrite his fate.

  • cycle
  • timeline reset
  • breaking pattern
  • acceptance

Q13

Why does Cooper warn Laura that she may not be meant to save Harrison?

Cooper has watched Laura obsessively relive the same memories, and as the keeper of Lost & Found he has a unique perspective on how grief traps people in the past. His warning reflects his belief that some losses are not meant to be undone, and that Laura's continued interference is causing more harm than healing. His skepticism plants the seed for Laura's eventual decision to stop trying to control the outcome and accept the reality of her loss.
