Bhaskaran, Sreenivasan the local village goldsmith, is in love with Snehalatha, Urvashi the daughter of P. V. Panicker, the village astrologer, Innocent. Panicker wants his daughter to marry a wealthy man working in the Persian Gulf, and when Bhaskaran finally proposes, Snehalatha asks for a symbol of love: a gold necklace made of ten sovereigns, meant to impress her father. Bhaskaran rises to the challenge, fashioning the necklace and presenting it to Snehalatha, but Panicker swiftly intervenes, admonishes his daughter, and pockets the piece, declaring that Bhaskaran’s gift was merely a sign of “brotherly love.” Panicker’s stance sets the stage for the village’s tangled loyalties and fragile pride.

Panicker soon receives a marriage proposal from Pavithran, an orphan who is living and working in Qatar, and he accepts the match [Jayaram]. A few days before the wedding, Panicker strides into the tea shop where the town’s regulars gather, proudly displaying the same golden necklace and claiming it was bought as a gift for his daughter. The crowd applauds what they see as a father’s noble gesture, and Bhaskaran learns that Panicker possesses the very necklace he had given Snehalatha years earlier. The truth unsettles Bhaskaran, and he resolves to confront Panicker’s family in a bold move to secure Snehalatha’s hand.

With Bhaskaran determined, he sets off for Panicker’s home, joined by a small band of village allies: Velichappadu, the temple oracle [Jagathy Sreekumar]; Pappi, the cattle trader [Oduvil Unnikrishnan]; Aboobacker, the tea-shop owner [Mamukkoya]; Hajiyar, one of the key figures in the village; and Madhavan Nair, a respected elder [Sankaradi], along with Bhaskaran’s own hopeful parents. A heated confrontation erupts at Panicker’s house. Snehalatha denies any love affair with Bhaskaran, and Panicker refuses to concede the necklace as a gift from Bhaskaran, arguing that such a token may never have existed in the first place. The village, awash in rumor and pride, quickly turns Bhaskaran into the butt of jokes, as people wonder whether he has been foolish to trust a sign that may not be genuine.

Life in the village continues its rhythm: Parvathy, a disciplined dance teacher, conducts classes on the second floor of Aboobacker’s worn-down tea shop; Pappi trades livestock while Madhavan Nair makes his routine late-night visits to Devayani, a village prostitute; and Velichappadu remains busy organizing the sacred temple festival, backed by Hajiyar. Amid these everyday dramas, Bhaskaran starts a small jewelry shop—Bhaskaran & Sons—cementing his own stake in the village economy and his reputation as a shrewd craftsman.

Pavithran marries Snehalatha and returns to the Middle East, where the couple’s life takes a difficult turn. Snehalatha becomes pregnant and returns home to deliver, after which Pavithran reappears, only to reveal a harsher truth: his brief stint abroad did not go well, and he spent time in jail. Back in Kerala, Pavithran plans to stay and invest in a truck business, even as he discovers that Snehalatha regularly adorns herself with the now-familiar ten-sovereign necklace. He contemplates pawning it to fund the truck and even promises to replace it with a new chain if profits come in.

Seeking funds, Pavithran consults Bhaskaran, who verifies the necklace and discovers, to his shock, that it is copper rather than gold. The reveal humbles Pavithran, who returns to Panicker’s home with a sense of humiliation, and Panicker admits that the necklace was not a gift from Bhaskaran but a token Bhaskaran had given Snehalatha years earlier. The revelation fractures the already strained relationships among Snehalatha, Bhaskaran, and Pavithran, and the village finds itself divided as factions take sides. The confrontation culminates in a dramatic scuffle sparked by jealousies and misunderstandings, punctuated by a moment when Hajiyar’s wife, Khalmayi, interrupts the scene, bringing a sobering pause to the brawl.

In the aftermath, Bhaskaran reflects on the deeper truth that the most enduring “gold” lies not in copper-colored trinkets but in the genuine affection that endures. The film closes with a hopeful turn: Bhaskaran’s heart has found its other kind of gold in the village’s dance teacher, Parvathi—the woman who understands art, resilience, and true devotion—affirming that she is, in a subtle sense, the real treasure. The tale lingers as a bright, earthy meditation on love, pride, and the value of sincerity over appearances.
