It is in this vibrant setting that she encounters the mysterious Will Darcy (pronounced “Dah-see”), an American who shares a longstanding friendship with the Indian-British barrister Balraj and his sister Kiran. As the celebrations progress, Lalita develops an immediate aversion to Darcy, sentiments that are echoed by her eldest sister Jaya when Balraj invites Jaya on a rejuvenating getaway to Goa.

Mrs. Bakshi, ever the supportive mother, encourages Lalita to accompany her sisters, and while initially hesitant, Lalita eventually consents. In the picturesque coastal town of Goa, what starts as a fierce dislike for Darcy blossoms into a series of passionate discussions about masculinity, femininity, and India’s economic framework. Tension escalates during a dramatic beach encounter, where Lalita crosses paths with Johnny Wickham, Darcy’s previous associate from London, further solidifying her negative impression of Darcy.

As the Bakshi family navigates the intricate maze of cultural exchanges, they receive a visit from Kohli Saab, an old friend from Los Angeles, who has returned to India in search of a traditional Indian bride. Noticing the chemistry between Kohli Saab and Jaya, Mrs. Bakshi subtly nudges Kohli Saab towards Lalita, causing her to feel increasingly uneasy. Meanwhile, calamity strikes when Lakhi Bakshi, the youngest sister, reveals that Lalita’s friend Chandra has accepted Kohli Saab’s proposal, leaving both Jaya and Lalita stunned. In a surprising twist, Johnny Wickham announces his plans to leave, assuring Lalita he will stay in touch through letters.

As the climax nears, Chandra and Kohli Saab invite the Bakshi family to their wedding in Los Angeles, heightening Jaya’s enthusiasm to possibly meet with Balraj in London. At the wedding festivities in Los Angeles, Darcy’s mother, Catherine, introduces Lalita to his past girlfriend, Anne, who humorously mispronounces Lalita’s name as “Lolita,” igniting a complex mix of feelings in Lalita. During this same event, Lalita learns from Darcy’s younger sister, Georgie, about the rift between Balraj and Darcy, which began when Darcy persuaded Balraj to abandon his plans to marry an Indian woman whose character was questionable.
