In the Swiss Alps, the local mood shifts to competitive cheer as the mayor announces a race up the Schmatterhorn with a prize of “50,000 kronkites.” The bold volunteer quickly steps forward: Yosemite Sam, ready to prove he’s the fastest climber around. Soon after, the mountain hums with excitement as a curious silhouette breaks from a rabbit hole—Bugs Bunny emerges, ears perched high, drawn by the band playing a lively send-off and a crowd that cheers him on.
Bugs isn’t content to watch from the sidelines. He decides to join the challenge, choosing a route that looks noticeably easier than Sam’s ambitious ascent. Sam, noticing Bugs’s intent, tries to thwart his rival’s plan with a boastful claim about the prize, calling out his nemesis with a taunt that only a showman could deliver. The spectacle escalates quickly: a careless shove sends a massive boulder rolling after Sam, flattening him as the rock gobbles up the slope in a dramatic, cartoonish tumble.
Undeterred, Sam crawls back up and feigns a partnership with Bugs, attempting a ruse that would guarantee both a victory. He ties a rope to himself and another to Bugs, tossing the second rope toward his supposed ally. Bugs greets the moment with his iconic witticism, while Sam’s plan unravels in a twist of deception. > What’s up, doc? <, Bugs taunts, to which Sam fires back, “Not what’s up, what’s down!” revealing the double-cross. Yet the trap backfires: the rope around the rock ends up anchored to the contraption that’s pulling Sam, and he finds himself dragged down the mountain once more, the crowd and band amplifying the chaos.
As Sam scrambles to recover, he climbs a cliff edge with renewed desperation. Bugs pretends to lend a hand, nudging him over a ledge only to watch him slip back, the music and cheers lending a carnival atmosphere to the peril. Sam then spots another opening to strike: a new boulder teeters over the edge, and as soon as he releases his grip, the boulder lurches after him, tumbling him off another precipice and burying him beneath a crack of rock and snow.
When the fall finally ends, Sam finds Bugs beneath a fresh layer of snow. He tries to warn against an avalanche, his voice amplified by bravado and a pistol shot that ricochets through the white expanse. The snow erupts nevertheless, shrouding Sam in white powder. A St. Bernard appears, pulls the dazed man from the snow, crafts and savors a small cocktail, and then trots off, hiccuping from the bear-like aftermath of the spectacle.
The chase resumes, stretching all the way to the mountain’s summit. At the top, Bugs reveals a change in fortune: they’ve climbed to the peak, but Sam has unknowingly reached the top of the Eiffel Tower instead. Bugs remarks with dry humor, “Well, as long as he’s happy, why tell him?” The band at the tower’s base keeps the original tune alive, playing the same song one more time as the end credits roll into the final scene: the familiar chorus of “That’s all Folks!” echoing across the alpine air.
