During a wild thunderstorm, Buddy and Cookie ride in a hot air balloon designed by Buddy, riding out the chaos as the sky fizzes with danger and dark humor. The moment is light despite the peril, and a faint bravado colors Buddy’s voice as he teases the impossible:

“In a few minutes, we’ll be on Mars,” Buddy proclaims, even as lightning flashes and the wind gnaws at the balloon’s fabric.

The storm grows stranger and more violent. A bolt of lightning sends Cookie into Buddy’s arms in a brief, tense moment of fear. The balloon darts toward a storm cloud that looms like a human face, then smashes into another cloud that seems to bull-rush the sky with blows rather than winds. The couple is spun wildly, their trajectory guided by gusts that feel as if they’re being boxed around the heavens. A cloud shaped like a rattlesnake spits more lightning, snapping two tethers and finally severing the basket itself, sending the two travelers tumbling toward the earth in a winding, uncertain descent.

The basket and balloon separate in a slow, drifting tumble. The anchor trails behind, and they drift toward a land they cannot quite recognize. A signpost appears, pointing the way toward a place marked: To Lemonia, the Sour Domain. A large bird, misjudging its distance from the tumbling basket, is snagged by the anchor and set down on a log as the battered contraption clatters onward. A gate opens to receive the rolling wreck, and the basket itself is dismantled by a crash that ends the ascent of their improbable voyage.

“Well, here we are!” Buddy exclaims with a surprisingly sunny tone given the mess, while Cookie asks, “Alright, smarty, where are we?” They look up at the strange structure into which their wrecked basket has crashed, and the sign nearby makes the joke plain: they have landed in Sourtown. The town’s rules are posted with a stern, almost comically forbidding tone: laughing, singing, dancing, and jazz music are expressly forbidden. Buddy cannot help but smile at the absurdity of such a list, and his laughter proves contagious as Cookie points out the caricatures of Laurel and Hardy in the stocks for smiling and laughing, with a tiny singing bird also imprisoned for singing.

Three men draw near, the smallest toting a mandolin and drinking from a butt of vinegar while rhyming about their grim outlook at a place they call Ye Pessimist’s Club. Although Buddy is an optimist at heart, he moves to intervene, grabbing the mandolin and breaking into a bright, carefree tune. He and Cookie sing and dance together, and they are soon joined by birds and flowers in a spontaneous chorus. A nearby policeman hears the merriment and starts toward the duo; the three grumpy men melt away into the shadows just as the couple is captured and brought before a crabby ruler.

Sourpan, king of Sourland, is introduced in a moment that makes the court feel almost like a bizarre theater. The monarch squeezes lemons with the crown atop his head, pouring the yellow juice into a bowl and tasting it, his face turning even more sour as the tang lingers on his tongue. The officer brings Buddy and Cookie before Sourpan, who sentences them to the punishment of spanking using a hand-cranked machine. Cookie whispers anxiously, and Buddy answers with quiet resolve: “Leave it to me.” He breaks into a lively harmonica solo that fills the hall with music, and Cookie joins in the dance, candles melting and the king’s retinue swaying to the rhythm.

Captivated by the music, Sourpan’s mood softens, and he rises to his feet with a grin that is almost genuine. The court sings along, and the king himself dances on a rug, only to lose balance and topple into the spanking device. The machine whirs as the king is playfully spanked by a rotating line of attendants, all to the laughing delight of the crowd. In a final twist of fate, Buddy sits on the king’s throne, and Cookie wears Buddy’s hat, their bond strengthened by shared misadventure. The two exchange a warm, relieved embrace as the strange court settles into an odd sort of harmony, and the adventure ends with a quiet, hopeful note.
