In the besieged town of Peaceful Gulch, a looming threat from a marauding band of brigands keeps the streets on edge. To deter the encroaching danger, the town’s mayor hatches a crafty plan: heists of courage and deception converge as a fake report is spread, announcing the imminent arrival of three stern marshals. The identities are drawn from a wanted poster depicting vagrants, a ruse meant to turn the tide in the townsfolk’s favor. The supposed marshals are the trio of Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard, a well-known act mistaken for the law by those who see only the poster.
That plan teeters on disaster when the Stooges—intended to impersonate the arriving marshals—nearly find themselves run out of town after a misguided attempt to administer a supposed panacea to the ailing Sheriff Hogwaller, Harry ‘Snub’ Pollard. The sheriff, afflicted with lumbago, is left precariously exposed as the ruse threatens to collapse, and the town watches with mixed skepticism and reluctant hope as the improvised ruse hangs in the balance.
The Stooges eventually take refuge in a local saloon, where they come face to face with Red Morgan, the marauder leader. Bud Jamison plays this imposing figure, who greets them with warmth and drink, all while the ruse begins to unravel under the pressure of real peril. The confrontation in the tavern becomes a turning point, revealing the fragility of their deceit and setting the stage for a more direct confrontation with the criminals.
When the Stooges are entrusted with guarding the town’s financial bastion, a brazen bank robbery strikes in their absence, forcing the trio to rally and pursue the culprits. Curiously, Curly, amid the pursuit, momentarily diverts his attention to a whimsical chase of a skunk while still pressing onward to recover the stolen plunder. The pursuit leads them to the robbers’ hideout, where the stolen goods are secured just as the criminals return to their lair, disrupting their plans and foiling the heist in a tense stand-off.
A string of misadventures culminates in a comic, crucible-like turn when Curly winds up trapped inside a stove, unwittingly serving as a receptacle for the ill-gotten gains. A chance misfire and an accidental blaze trigger a cascade of bullets that scatters the outlaws in disarray, forcing a chaotic retreat and leaving the town breathing a little easier, even as the Stooges scramble to pick up the pieces from their raucous, unorthodox triumph.
