When the Little Red-Haired Girl moves into Charlie Brown’s neighborhood, he finds himself captivated by her charm, yet his overwhelming string of bad luck leaves him feeling invisible. Encouraged by Lucy, who suggests that confidence may change his fate, Charlie Brown sets out on a mission to engage in various new activities that he hopes will attract her attention. His initial endeavor to showcase his skills at the school’s talent show sees him attempting a magic act with the help of his loyal beagle, Snoopy. Unfortunately, chaos ensues when his sister Sally encounters trouble in her performance. Without hesitation, Charlie Brown sacrifices his moment for her, diving back into the fray to rescue Sally, only to find himself humiliated in the end.
After discovering that the Little Red-Haired Girl has a passion for dancing, he eagerly joins the school dance and recruits Snoopy to teach him cool moves. For a moment, Charlie Brown shines and garners admiration from peers, but just as he begins to feel accepted, his clumsiness triggers the sprinkler system, abruptly ending the festivities and overshadowing his accomplishments.
Later, a golden opportunity arises for Charlie Brown when he is paired with the Little Red-Haired Girl for a book report. Although initially thrilled to work alongside her, he soon faces heartbreak when she’s called away for a family emergency. Undeterred, Charlie sets out to impress both her and their teacher by tackling a challenging collegiate-level novel, War and Peace. As luck would have it, Charlie also scores remarkably well on a standardized test, where—much to his shock—he is celebrated by his classmates. However, dismay strikes when he learns that a mistake means the accolades actually belong to Peppermint Patty. Choosing to relinquish his medal, Charlie’s brief moment of popularity vanishes in an instant.
Tragedy strikes again when his meticulously crafted book report is abruptly destroyed, leading him to confess to the Little Red-Haired Girl about their failure to complete the assignment.
As the school year comes to an end, Charlie Brown is taken aback when she picks him as a pen pal. Linus encourages him to reveal his true feelings before she embarks on summer camp. In a desperate race to find her before she leaves, Charlie Brown finds himself at the bus station just as the bus is about to depart. Though initial attempts to reach her are thwarted, fortune smiles upon him when a kite tangled in the notorious Kite-Eating Tree unexpectedly propels him towards the bus’s window. The sight of him flying a kite catches the attention of the other children, who eagerly join the chase.
Upon reaching the bus, Charlie Brown gathers the courage to ask why she chose him, despite his numerous failures. She praises his selflessness, calling him an honest and compassionate individual, and they promise to keep in touch. Charlie Brown’s revelation about the Little Red-Haired Girl’s admiration fills him with joy, and as he steps away from the bus, he is lifted high by his classmates in celebration of his newfound confidence and spirit.
Meanwhile, in a delightful subplot, Snoopy discovers a typewriter and takes to writing a novel about his adventurous alter-ego, the World War I Flying Ace. In a quest to save his beloved Fifi from the clutches of the Red Baron, Snoopy embarks on a thrilling escapade, ultimately defeating the villain. However, while reveling in victory with Fifi and his siblings, he learns of the Red Baron’s survival, sparking a fiery determination for revenge.
