Riley is fresh out of rehab, battling an eating disorder and grappling with deep-seated body image issues. When her mother, Olivia, unexpectedly fails to pick her up, Riley turns to her best friend, Casey, for support. Casey invites Riley to a bar, where she meets her boyfriend, Justin, and his roommate, Ethan. Despite her initial hesitations, Riley agrees to grab dinner with Ethan, revealing to him her participation in a twelve-step program that advises against romantic relationships for the first year post-rehab. Ethan is understanding, yet their connection deepens, leading them back to her apartment. However, overwhelmed by her insecurities, Riley halts their intimate encounter, despite Ethan’s willingness to be there for her by building a fort in her living space.

Riley attends therapy sessions with Dr. Akerman, who expresses concern that her budding friendship with Ethan might be her way of escaping her insecurities, similar to her previous compulsive behaviors. Riley dismisses this notion, but the struggle persists as she continuously compares herself to social media models and listens to voicemail messages from her ex-boyfriend, Hunter. Meanwhile, her friend Casey, who is currently unemployed, manages to land Riley a job as a hostess at a struggling murder mystery dinner theater, which suffers due to its poorly crafted storylines.

As time passes, Riley’s life takes a turn when she begins dating Max, the bartender at the theater, much to Ethan’s dismay. Riley is invited to celebrate Thanksgiving with Ethan’s family, where she learns more about his father, Jamie, who is battling alcoholism. Following an uncomfortable family argument, Riley spills her feelings to Ethan about her breakup with Max and her insecurities, leading to an intimate moment where they decide to take their relationship further—yet guilt lingers afterward.

As Riley’s relationship with Ethan evolves, her insecurities resurface and drive a wedge between them. Feeling overwhelmed, she leans on Dr. Akerman for support. Meanwhile, Ethan confides in Justin about his frustrations in trying to help Riley while dealing with his own emotions. Riley’s workplace struggles reach a peak when her boss, Bryce, expresses concern about shutting down the theater. In a moment of inspiration, Riley proposes a new true crime plot for the murder mystery, which Bryce enthusiastically accepts.

However, things take a turn when Riley learns that Ethan is dating another woman, Gwen. Struggling with her feelings, she attempts to reach out to Max, but Casey intervenes, urging her to focus on more than just her emotional turmoil. A chance encounter while shopping for a vacuum leads to an awkward run-in with Hunter, and upon returning home, Riley finds her mother has decided to cut her off financially due to her irresponsible spending. After a confrontation with Olivia, Ethan steps in to defend Riley, taking her to a family cabin for emotional support.

At the cabin, tension rises when Riley tries to kiss Ethan, only for him to resist, citing his ongoing therapy sessions as a reason to step back. They exchange harsh words, leading Riley to seek solace in painkillers and alcohol, resulting in a dangerous situation that lands her in the hospital. After waking up, she finds Olivia by her side, who reveals that Ethan stayed until he was asked to leave. Olivia pledges to provide more support, paving the way for healing.

Back at work, Riley’s revamped murder mystery story becomes a sensational success, restoring her self-worth. In a twist of fate, Casey and Justin host a gender reveal party where Riley and Ethan, accompanied by Gwen, share charged glances but remain distant. A poignant flashback reveals Ethan’s heartfelt words in the hospital, affirming his love for Riley, yet acknowledging his need to let go for her own good.

In a moment of clarity during a therapy session, Riley resolves to eliminate distractions from her life, including her phone, and expresses her hope for a brighter future ahead, despite the challenges she has faced.
