In 1972, blond Peter enrolls at an elite Virginia university, joins a fraternity and meets classics major William, who is attracted to him. He enters a ménage à trois with his roommate Joe and Joe's girlfriend Bess. After a violent clash, poetry professor Ian shelters him at his country house, where their forbidden romance deepens, but jealousy endangers their happiness.
