Anna De La Vega, an intelligent American student, embarks on a year-long journey at the University of Oxford to study Victorian poetry. Right from her first day, her encounter with Jamie Davenport, played by Barney Harris, begins with a humorous mishap when she gets splashed by his car. Unexpectedly, she later discovers that Jamie is going to be one of her instructors. Though their initial interactions are marked by teasing and playful mockery, their chemistry quickly sparks a more personal connection.

One evening, after some amusing exchanges, they share a fun night out, which notably includes Anna’s first experience in a pub. However, their budding flirtation hits a stumbling block when Jamie seemingly rejects Anna at the end of the night. To make him jealous, Anna dances with another man, unintentionally intensifying their emotional conflict. The next day, Jamie surprises her by showing her a special book, signaling a shift in their relationship. They reconcile, and their connection deepens, culminating in a consensual romantic encounter. Both agree that their relationship is casual, but a sense of genuine affection grows between them.

Anna confides in Cecilia, a close friend of Jamie, played by Poppy Gilbert, who warns her to be cautious. Over the subsequent months, their bond becomes stronger, bringing them closer together. Eventually, Jamie invites Anna to his home, where he shares the sensitive story of his brother Eddie’s death from cancer. Jamie reveals that his relationship with his father has become strained after Eddie’s passing, adding emotional complexity to his character. One morning, Jamie appears distant, clearly struggling with his feelings.

While attending the Oxford versus Cambridge boat race with friends, Anna notices Jamie has been absent from the library for weeks, and Cecilia has also been busy. Fed up and worried, Anna confronts Jamie at his place, where she unexpectedly finds Cecilia. She is then shocked to learn that Jamie is unwell and undergoing medical treatment, which causes him to become very upset. Jamie later confesses that Eddie suffered from cancer, and that Cecilia was actually his girlfriend. The cancer was hereditary, and Jamie is now facing the same deadly disease. What Anna previously saw was his last treatment, as he is now refusing further medical intervention due to the agonizing pain. Jamie’s father, played by Dougray Scott, is visibly upset over his son’s condition. Jamie advises Anna that she should not waste her precious time on him, but she recalls a meaningful early conversation and reassures him that she doesn’t want him to suffer alone.

Despite his reservations, Jamie agrees to take Anna to a formal ball, where they meet his parents for the first time. During the evening, Anna engages in a heartfelt conversation with Jamie’s father, who expresses his hope that Anna can persuade Jamie to return home for the best possible treatment. Yet, Jamie remains dismissive and weak. He collapses upon returning home, leading to a hospital stay. Outside the hospital, Anna observes Jamie’s father, deeply concerned.

In celebration of Anna’s birthday, she drives Jamie’s car to visit the grand castle where he grew up, and her friends surprise her there with a party. Jamie, however, continues to avoid his father, who discusses a new drug treatment, though Jamie resists the idea of spending his remaining days in the hospital. He reveals to Anna that Eddie died at that very castle, which brings more emotional weight to his story. After opening her birthday present, Anna finds Jamie reconciling with his father, who is building a model car that she gifted him—an activity reminiscent of when Jamie and Eddie were young. As the truth of Jamie’s illness becomes more widespread, Anna openly declares her love for him amid the somber reality of his condition.

Anna receives a call from her parents, and she decides to stay in England instead of returning to New York for her job. This decision sparks a heated argument with Jamie, who is upset about her choosing her future over their relationship. Their disagreement ends with Anna sleeping in a separate room at Jamie’s behest, and Jamie smashing the model car they had worked on together. Feeling hurt and uncertain, Anna decides to leave England, graduating without further contact with Jamie. Later, they reconnect, and Anna expresses her wish to stay with him despite his fears of her regretting her choice. After some hesitation, they reconcile, sharing an intimate moment.

Tragically, the morning after, Anna finds Jamie unresponsive. In the hospital, a doctor reveals that his weakened immune system from cancer has led to a critical case of pneumonia, and he urgently needs treatment. Jamie’s father, finally understanding his son’s wishes, refuses to authorize additional medical care. Jamie and Anna share a quiet, emotional farewell as he slips away peacefully in her arms. A time skip shows Anna traveling across Europe alone, carrying the memories of their love, and eventually returning to teach the very class Jamie had once taught her.

Throughout the story, themes of love, loss, and resilience intertwine as Anna and Jamie’s relationship confronts life’s harshest realities with tenderness and strength.
