Love Laughs at Andy Hardy

In the small town of Carvel, Judge Hardy Lewis Stone and his wife Emily Fay Holden Hardy eagerly await the homecoming of their son, Andy Mickey Rooney Hardy, who has just been honorably discharged after two years of service. They still don’t know that Andy plans to rekindle a romance with his college sweetheart Kay Bonita Granville Wilson.

Shortly after, Emily notices Andy glancing at wedding bands and baby clothes in shop windows, a sign that love is on his mind. The clue grows clearer when he crosses paths with the attractive Isobel Gonzales Lina Romay at the Carvel country club, and Emily’s suspicion is confirmed: the usually easygoing young man seems intrigued by her, though his heart remains set on Kay as he aims to return to Wainwright College to finish his studies.

Andy tries to keep the romance a secret from his parents, even as Isobel’s presence complicates his plans. He resolves to return to college soon to be with Kay, while quietly hoping to reunite with her, all the while trying to keep his fledgling feelings from surfacing at home. A telegram addressed to him at his parents’ house nudges the tension higher: he panics and hurries to intercept it before anyone else can read it, concealing his motive from a watchful family.

A sequence of comic misadventures follows. First, a shower mishap reveals a larger problem: the water is shut off, and when Andy steps outside to fix it, the front door shuts and locks behind him. He hides in the garden shrubbery until his parents return, but a passing policeman doesn’t buy his story and insists on taking him inside to obtain confirmation from his parents. The misunderstanding fuels Emily’s concern that her son is losing his grip on reality, and she urges Judge Hardy to set him straight about choosing the right kind of partner.

Determined to guide him, the couple follows Andy to Wainwright University to keep him away from Kay and to watch over his choices. At the college, the freshman class president, Duke Johnson [Hal Hackett], offers Andy the honor of serving as chairman of the freshman dance once he returns. Andy accepts, only to learn that Kay cannot attend due to a family emergency. To fill the dance gap, Duke pairs him with Coffy Smith [Dorothy Ford], a notably tall girl who makes Andy look small by comparison. Initially embarrassed, the pair grow into a genuine friendship as they navigate the awkward situation and the social expectations of campus life.

The plot thickens when Kay returns to Wainwright and reveals a heartbreaking twist: she has fallen in love with her guardian Dane Kittridge [Dick Simmons] and plans to marry him the very next day. Andy is crushed, yet he guards his pride and agrees to serve as Kay’s best man, a gesture that shows his resilient good humor. After the ceremony, Andy contemplates leaving for South America to escape his sorrow, but his father’s steady counsel persuades him to stay, return to Wainwright, and complete his degree.

Across these events, the film threads a gentle portrait of family devotion, youthful ambition, and the comic resilience that defines small-town romance. The measured leadership of Judge Hardy and Emily’s warmth provide a steady throughline as Andy negotiates secret attractions, family expectations, and the bittersweet realization that love does not always align with one’s ideal future.
