Odd Girl Out

Vanessa Snyder is introduced as an intelligent eighth-grader who is best friends with Stacey Larson and Nikki Rodriguez. The trio forms the popular clique, with Stacey as the queen bee and Nikki secretly jealous of their bond. Vanessa's loving divorced mother Barbara is proud of her daughter and supportive of her.

Nikki tricks Vanessa into pursuing Tony, a boy whom Stacey also has a crush on. Vanessa's attempt to get closer to Tony triggers tension within the clique. As a result, Vanessa is ostracized and Tiffany becomes Nikki's new ally.

The clique, along with Ezra, launches an online harassment site called 'Hating Vanessa.' Students post insulting content about Vanessa, widening the social gulf she experiences. The online abuse deepens her isolation.
