Moment of Truth: Why My Daughter?

Set in the 1980s, this drama follows Diana Moffitt, Jamie Luner, a likable 17-year-old from Portland, Oregon, who is blindsided when her parents announce their divorce and her boyfriend ends the relationship. Grief pushes her toward a risky path, and she becomes involved with A.J. Treece, Antonio Sabàto, Jr., a 23-year-old man who Gayle Moffitt, Linda Gray, immediately senses is trouble. He turns out to be a pimp who pulls Diana into prostitution, a choice that shakes up her life: she drops out of school, quits her job, and grows distant from her family.

Gayle’s heartbreak becomes a forceful drive to save her daughter. She confronts Diana in the strip club where she works and begins a tireless effort to intervene, hoping to pull her back from the life she’s slipping into. Diana, meanwhile, vacillates between flashes of her old life and the dark world she’s entangled in, struggling to break free.

After a violent confrontation, Diana disassociates herself from A.J. and returns home with her mother, agreeing to press charges—only to have them drop when A.J. persuades her that he can change and promises to reform. Tragedy soon follows as Diana is murdered under mysterious circumstances, leaving Gayle distraught and convinced of A.J.’s responsibility.

Determined to bring him to justice, Gayle reaches out to Sgt. Jack Powell, James Eckhouse, who pursues the case even when initial charges prove hard to pin on A.J., who claims he played no part in Diana’s death. In her search for additional avenues to prosecute, Gayle connects with April, Alanna Ubach, another one of A.J.’s prostitutes and a friend from the club, who begins to share information that could implicate him.

As the investigation deepens, the authorities secure charges of racketeering and promoting prostitution against A.J., and, despite his denials, the evidence holds. He is found guilty at trial, a verdict that brings a sense of closure to Gayle’s relentless pursuit of the truth. The film’s epilogue notes that A.J. is sentenced to 17 years, and it also leaves Diana’s murder officially unsolved, a quiet echo of the unresolved pain that lingers for her family.
