To maintain peace, the Institute for Elite Knights is formed to train descendants of the knights, ensuring only the finest are knighted. The legacy of Gloreth is preserved through this elite institution.

In the present day, Ballister Boldheart, a commoner, is about to be knighted alongside Ambrosius Goldenloin by Queen Valerin. This monumental event highlights the progressive acceptance of commoners in knightly roles.

During the knightly ceremony, an accidental laser discharge from Ballister's sword strikes and kills Queen Valerin. This tragic event leads to chaos as accusations fly and the kingdom descends into turmoil.

In the ensuing chaos, Ambrosius, fueled by fear and confusion, grievously cuts off Ballister's arm. This betrayal forces Ballister to flee as a fugitive, marked by the murder of the Queen.

As Ballister escapes, he crafts a prosthetic arm and meets Nimona, a shape-shifting outcast. Nimona, sensing a shared sense of injustice, offers her aid to help Ballister seek revenge against the elitist society.

Nimona and Ballister plot to kidnap Diego the Squire, who possesses vital evidence that could expose the true killer of the Queen. They hope to unveil the real villain behind the throne, the Director of the Institute.

After obtaining crucial video evidence, Ballister and Nimona confront Ambrosius and the Director. However, the Director manipulates the evidence and turns Ambrosius against Ballister, resulting in his arrest.

In a surprising turn of events, the Director confesses to framing Ballister and admits to murdering the Queen. With this knowledge, Ballister captures the confession, but the Director twists the narrative against him.

Heartbroken by the events, Nimona flees into the woods after a heated confrontation with Ballister. Reflecting on her past at a well, she transforms into the Great Black Monster, contemplating her own demise.

Just as Nimona attempts to end her life, Ballister intervenes, embracing her and seeking reconciliation. Their heartfelt moment is witnessed by the kingdom, renewing hope amidst the chaos.

As the Director unleashes a devastating laser cannon against Nimona, she transforms into a majestic phoenix-like creature to protect the kingdom. This selfless act leads to her apparent demise along with the Director.

Following the destruction of the Director, the kingdom starts to heal, and the barriers dividing its citizens begin to crumble. Ballister and Nimona are celebrated as heroes, symbolizing a new era of acceptance.

As time passes, Ballister senses Nimona's presence, discovering that she has survived against all odds. The bond between them and Ambrosius strengthens, leading to a future filled with renewed hope.
