Night Has a Thousand Eyes

Late one night in Los Angeles, Elliott Carson stops Jean Courtland from leaping in front of a train. The moment shakes them both and raises questions about Jean's safety and her fortune. This event sets the night’s tension in motion.

The couple shares a meal at a Los Angeles restaurant where they meet John Triton, who claims clairvoyant powers. Elliott suspects John is using Jean’s fears to gain control of her inheritance. John asserts his gift and offers proof of its truth.

To convince Elliott, John recounts a past vision and argues that foreknowledge is real and protective, not manipulative. The conversation grows tense as Elliott presses him to demonstrate. The exchange leaves both men wary of each other.

In a flashback, John, his fiancée Jenny, and Whitney Courtland tour with a vaudeville style magic act. John discovers his ability to foresee future events. He warns Jenny and leaves her with Whitney, advising them to buy land in Oklahoma.

Jenny and Whitney marry and conceive their daughter Jean. Jenny dies during childbirth, leaving Whitney a widowed father. Jean is born into a life of wealth and risk.

Three months earlier, John reads of Whitney’s oil strike and his move to Bunker Hill, where the fortune grows. John has a vision of Whitney dying in a plane crash and moves to Bunker Hill to find his old friend and protect Jean.

John reaches Jean and tries to warn her about her father's fate. Before they can speak, Whitney dies in a plane crash in New Mexico.

John tells Jean that she will die within one week on a clear night under the stars, and that he will be her protector. He entrusts her fate to himself as she questions the gift.

Elliott visits the police to learn about John's past, and they reveal that Whitney's crash may have been orchestrated. The propeller shaft had been tampered with, suggesting foul play.

Back at the Courtland estate, a fearful Jean waits for her foretold death while a group of oil workers staying there search for merger paperwork. The tension surrounding the merger builds as suspicion grows.

John experiences a fresh premonition of his own death by gunshot and glimpses the manner of Jean’s death, the feet of a lion. The visions intensify as the clock ticks toward danger.

During the night, an unseen assailant tries to smother Jean in her bed. Jean survives when John intervenes just as the grandfather clock is manipulated to chime prematurely at eleven.

John rushes to stop the killer but is shot by police who mistake him for an accomplice. Jean is spared the immediate threat, and the scene crescendos with confusion and fear.

The killer is revealed to be one of the oil workers who opposed the Courtland merger. His motive is to derail the deal that would strengthen the Courtlands’ control.

At the crime scene, Elliott finds a letter from John detailing his own death, written in anticipation of saving Jean. The note confirms that John anticipated his fate while protecting Jean.
