Murdered for Being Different (2017) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

A young couple, Rob Nico Mirallegro Maltby and Sophie Sophie McShera Gorman, buy alcohol at a late-night convenience store. They come across the night with warmth, their bond evident despite their bold, exaggerated gothic outfits. The moment seems light, and their shared smile hints at a closeness that feels genuine.

A teenager named Michael approaches and asks Sophie to touch her hair—black and red dreadlocks—that she laughs about, joking that she’ll have to charge him next time. Michael invites them to the park, and the trio heads out into the night, a sense of easy camaraderie hanging in the air.

In the park, a crowd of young people gathers. Most of them, especially the girls, are drawn to the couple’s striking style, and one girl asks for a picture with them. The gothic couple and the street teenagers seem to get along, sharing a moment of unusual harmony. But that fragile calm shatters less than half an hour later, when Rob and Sophie are shown beaten in a bloody scene, and Sophie lies unconscious.

Detective Constable Farley Chanel Cresswell is placed in charge of the investigation. She interviews Michael, who had called an ambulance to the site and says he was just passing by when he happened to see the injured pair. The detectives learn that CCTV cameras in the neighborhood were out of service, and there are no clear witnesses or hard evidence to push the case forward. The teenagers lie about what happened, though Michael expresses sympathy and regret, and he reflects on the brutal night that changed everything.

Rob wakes up in hospital with serious injuries and no memory of the attack. Sophie remains in a coma for two weeks before life support is eventually switched off. Michael learns of Sophie’s death and comes forward to the police with his testimony, despite fearing threats from the gang leader.

Flashbacks gradually reveal Rob and Sophie’s relationship. Rob falls for Sophie at a pub, then brings her to his secret base. As an art student, he paints wings on Sophie’s back because he sees her as an angel, a living Mona Lisa in his eyes. Sophie shares a love of Harry Potter, and Rob reads with her, their romance unfolding on a windswept hilltop in the cold night air.

Before this case, Rob and Sophie had already faced threats because of their appearance, a trauma that lingers in the memories they both carry. Traumatized by the beating and Sophie’s death, Rob becomes afraid to step outside. Yet in the end, he chooses to reclaim his identity, donning Goth clothes and makeup again in memory of Sophie and as a quiet stand for the beliefs they held together.
