New York socialite Eloise “Honey Bear” Kelly [Ava Gardner] arrives at a remote African outpost hoping to rendezvous with a rich maharaja, only to learn his trip has been canceled because of unrest in his realm. While waiting for the next river boat, she clashes with Victor Marswell [Clark Gable], a hard-edged big‑game hunter and wild animal catcher from the United States who initially sees her as disreputable. Marswell’s partner in business is the plucky English hunter John Brown-Pryce, known as “Brownie” [Philip Stainton], who is unusually sympathetic toward Kelly and believes that her scars run deeper than any visible mark. Marswell’s relationship with his employee, the gruff Russian Leon Boltchak [Eric Pohlmann], sits on a tense, semi-hostile edge, setting a backdrop of danger and grit to their encounter.

Kelly and Marswell soon find themselves drawn to one another, their initial animosity giving way to a charged mutual attraction that quickly turns into a private, intimate connection. The uneasy dynamic between the American hunter and the British socialite creates a push-pull tension that colors every interaction, even as Brownie quietly offers support and understanding for Kelly’s fragile past. The river’s current carries more players into the story when London couple Donald Nordley and his wife Linda board the steamer, with the steamer’s British skipper [Laurence Naismith] at Marswell’s urging guaranteeing their passage, even as Honey Bear would have preferred to remain with Marswell.

The Nordleys hope to safari into gorilla country to record the creatures’ cries, but Marswell refuses to guide them there himself, insisting that his assistant lead the way along the route, despite the Nordleys’ protests. Honey Bear re‑enters the group after their steamer suffers engine trouble and runs aground, a setback that foreshadows the trio’s growing entanglements. Marswell rescues Linda from a panther, revealing a magnetic attraction between them that Honey Bear observes with a wary heart. After a private conversation with Linda, Marswell agrees to help the Nordleys reach gorilla country, while also guiding Honey Bear part of the way to join the district commissioner who can return her to civilization.

Yet the party’s escape is complicated when they discover the district commissioner mortally wounded by belligerent Samburu tribesmen; reinforcements are days away, and the small party must press on with only each other for support. A genuine romance blossoms between Marswell and Linda, while Donald Nordley remains oblivious to the growing affair. Marswell muses about telling Donald the truth, but hesitation wins out as he understands how deeply Donald loves Linda and suspects she might be better off with him after all. The crisis intensifies when Marswell reluctantly shoots a gorilla to save Donald, a choice that squelches his chance to capture a baby gorilla and leaves him desolate in his tent, where Honey Bear finds him.

Linda’s arrival into the tent scene reveals the complicated web of feelings: she finds the two men intertwined in a moment that threatens to fracture their fragile accord. Marswell resolves to push Linda away by feigning a breakup, even cruelly belittling her infatuation with him as he acts dismissive about her prospects with the White Hunter, hoping to provoke her into leaving. His cruel ploy backfires when Linda shoots him in the arm with his own pistol, forcing a stark moment of reckoning.

The next day, the party breaks camp to head back, leaving Marswell behind to stay and try to capture young gorillas to fund the safari. In a rare admission, Marswell acknowledges his feelings for Honey Bear and asks her to stay, even proposing marriage—but she rebuffs him. As the canoes begin to pull away, Honey Bear unexpectedly vaults into the river and wades back toward Marswell, signaling that their bond may still endure even amid the wilderness’s trials.
