The film opens with a disturbing mural that portrays surreal rituals against a backdrop of dark, snow-covered forests. The haunting sound of folk songs sets a tone of eerie anticipation, foreshadowing the unsettling events to come.

Dani Ardor finds herself increasingly worried about her sister, Terri, who suffers from bipolar disorder. Attempting to reach out for help, Dani encounters voice messages that indicate something is terribly wrong, and she seeks reassurance from her boyfriend, Christian.

Shortly after speaking with Christian, Dani receives devastating news that confirms her worst fears. Authorities report that Terri has tragically killed their parents in a carbon monoxide accident, leaving Dani reeling from grief and loss.

Months later, still grappling with her sorrow, Dani learns about a rare midsommar festival in Harga, Sweden. Initially invited only out of pity, she surprises Christian by insisting on joining, feeling hurt for being excluded from an important experience in his life.

Upon arriving in Sweden, Dani meets several new acquaintances, including Simon and Connie, as the festive atmosphere begins. As the group engages in psychedelic experiences, Dani finds herself triggered by the sensations and the sights around her.

Dani is soon overwhelmed by paranoia and hallucinations, prompting vivid dreams of her deceased sister, Terri. The emotional and psychological tension deepens as she awakens next to Christian, trying to process her grief amidst the festival's chaos.

During the festival, the group witnesses an unimaginable event when two elderly villagers leap off a cliff in a ritualistic act. While her friends react with horror, Dani’s response reveals her complicated grief and a disturbing contemplation about life and death.

As the festivities continue, Dani participates in a maypole dance and emerges as the last woman standing, earning the title of May Queen. This moment of triumph is tainted, however, by the feelings of isolation and the growing tension with Christian.

Dani's joyful moment takes a dark turn when she sees Christian engaging in an intimate act with Maja, a local villager. This betrayal crushes Dani, pushing her deeper into despair and severing her already strained relationship with Christian.

As the festival reaches its climax, Dani is thrust into a dark and grotesque ritual where she must make harrowing sacrifices. Christian and his friends find themselves targeted by the villagers, as the sinister customs of Harga unfold around them.

In a chilling and horrific twist, Christian meets his end encased inside a bear's corpse as part of the ritual. His tragic fate symbolizes the culmination of the village's manipulation and the consequences of his betrayal toward Dani.

Finalizing her emotional journey, Dani faces the villagers as they collectively express their anguish. Stricken with horror yet amid the chaos, a disturbing smile begins to appear on her face as she finally finds a sense of belonging amidst her pain.
