Vinod Kumar is an upright and honest editor who runs the newspaper Mashaal, dedicated to exposing the ills of society. His wife, Sudha Kumar, tries to guide a vagabond named Raja toward values, and the editor, though initially skeptical, grows to trust him after learning Raja’s tragic childhood and seeing Sudha as a maternal figure. To give Raja a real chance, he sends him to Bangalore to finish his education and pursue journalism. During their frequent meetings, Raja befriends Geeta, an aspiring journalist and an assistant at the paper, and the two fall in love, adding a personal dimension to the intertwined destinies around Mashaal.
As Raja’s path intertwines with Vinod’s investigations, Vinod uncovers the truth about S.K. Vardhan—a wealthy and respected man who stands behind many malpractices, including drug-trafficking and hooch. Vinod begins to expose the illicit operations connected to this powerful figure, confronting bribes and intimidation. When Vinod refuses to back down, S.K. Vardhan retaliates by coercing him out of his rented house and, that very night, having his office set ablaze by S.K.’s men. The tragedy strikes hard when Sudha dies on the road, leaving Vinod broken and disillusioned, wondering whether the fight against corruption has any real payoff.
This disillusionment pushes Vinod to a startling reversal: rather than continue the honest crusade, he decides to follow the very path of power and wealth he once condemned, in hopes of destroying the corrupt empire from within. He partners with Kishorilal to start illicit hooch production and other illegal ventures, a turn that gradually makes him rich while distant from the man he once was. Meanwhile, Raja remains in Bangalore, unaware of these changes, as Geeta, who has grown resentful of Vinod, works for another newspaper. The love story between Raja and Geeta deepens, even as the professional world around them becomes more dangerous.
Raja eventually returns after completing his education, and encounters Vinod, who seems to live a transformed life. He is surprised by the altered, more opulent lifestyle, yet he does not know the full truth behind this new reality. In the meantime, Raja befriends Munna—an old acquaintance—who reveals that a new crime lord has entered the fold and has gained a foothold in the hooch and drugs world. Believing Razorsharp in his duty to expose corruption, Raja decides to report this crime lord, not realizing that the target is his own foster father. When the revelation finally lands, Raja is stunned but chooses to respect Vinod as his mentor, vowing to continue the righteous path that Vinod once taught him, earning Vinod’s blessing to pursue his chosen work despite the painful truth.
The conflict escalates as Vinod and S.K.’s enmity comes to a head, with Raja starting to publish pieces about both men. In a fateful turn, S.K. kidnaps Raja to silence him. Vinod intervenes, saving Raja and confronting S.K. in a brutal showdown. Vinod kills S.K. by throwing him into the spinning printing press wheels, a grim culmination of the corrupt cycle. A desperate Keshav—one of S.K.’s henchmen—tries to shoot Raja, but Vinod steps in and is fatally shot in the process. Keshav is arrested, and Vinod dies in Raja’s arms, a once‑righteous life now ended, but not without a sense of contentment that his guidance could still live on through the young journalist he mentored.
