After enduring the terror inflicted by her serial killer husband, Simon Fairbairn, known as 'The Beast of Bampton,' Rose decides to escape. She relocates her children, Jack, Jane, Billy, and Sam, to her secluded childhood home in America in hopes of hiding from her violent past.

To protect their identities and remain hidden, Rose has her children take her maiden name, Marrowbone. This new identity becomes crucial in their attempt to navigate life away from Simon’s reach and build a semblance of normalcy.

At the beachside landmark 'Red Witch Rock,' the siblings encounter Allie, a local girl who lives on a nearby farm. As they bond and develop friendships, Jack and Allie begin to form a romantic connection during their time together.

Bedridden with a terminal illness, Rose makes Jack promise to keep their family hidden until he reaches the age of 21. This promise weighs heavily on Jack as he discovers Rose had kept a box of stolen money hidden away, leading to complex feelings about their father's crimes.
