What Happens in Mama: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Mama (2013) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

A man, desperate and driven by tragic circumstances, takes the lives of his business partners and estranged ex-wife before fleeing with his daughters, the young Victoria and infant Lilly. Their harrowing escape leads them down a secluded, snowy road, where fate intervenes as he crashes the car into the woods. Seeking refuge, he discovers an abandoned cabin, which soon becomes the setting of a dark turn of events. As he grapples with the gravity of his actions and plans an unimaginable end to their suffering, a mysterious figure interjects at the last moment, resulting in his untimely demise. Victoria, still reeling from the accident and wearing broken glasses, can only perceive this stranger as a blur.

Fast forward five years, and their Uncle Lucas, portrayed by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, along with his girlfriend Annabel, has been tirelessly searching for the missing siblings, utilizing their inheritance as a means to fuel their quest. Their efforts lead them to the abandoned vehicle and ultimately to the cabin, where they find Victoria and Lilly, who have reverted to wild, animalistic behavior, with Victoria instinctively protecting Lilly from these newfound intruders.

Cared for by the enigmatic psychiatrist Dr. Dreyfuss, the children enter a struggle over custody, with Lucas facing an uphill battle against a wealthy relative who wishes to claim the girls. The court questions their capability to provide a stable upbringing, particularly given their unique needs. However, Dr. Dreyfuss agrees to back Lucas and Annabel's guardianship provided they relocate to a specialized facility. Unknown to them, the ominous presence of the entity the girls refer to as "Mama" has followed them into their new home.

Gradually, the history of "Mama" unfolds through a mix of haunting dreams experienced by Annabel, Dr. Dreyfuss's research, and the children's accounts. The figure is revealed to be a tragic soul, once a patient in an 1800s asylum. Her heartbreaking past is marked by the loss of her own baby, Lily, after a series of harrowing events led her to leap off a cliff in despair. Now, as an apparition, she seeks solace and attempts to connect with the abandoned children who remind her of her lost offspring.

Her presence, often foreshadowed by ominous black butterflies and electrical disturbances, leads to numerous frightening encounters. Tension rises as Lucas, now pushed into a coma due to Mama's interference, leaves Annabel reluctantly stepping into a protective role for both girls. As time progresses, Victoria begins to acclimate to the family unit, while Lilly remains fiercely loyal to Mama, raising suspicions in Annabel as she grapples with the reality of the supernatural threat.

Dr. Dreyfuss eventually discovers unsettling truths regarding Mama and, in his quest for understanding, meets a gruesome fate at her hands. Meanwhile, the children's aunt, concerned for their welfare, begins to monitor the household more closely, convinced Annabel has abused the girls. Lucas, guided by visions from the afterlife, seeks to rescue his nieces as Annabel discovers the dark truths hidden in Dr. Dreyfuss's belongings. The tension escalates as Mama's rage culminates in a terrifying confrontation leading Annabel and Lucas to the cliff, mirroring Mama’s tragic past.

In a heart-stopping finale, as they rush to save the children from a fate resembling their own twisted history, a pivotal moment occurs when Mama finds her baby’s remains, causing her form to momentarily revert to something more human. Ultimately, the scene becomes a tragic echo of the past as Mama believes that reunion with her child lies in death. In a desperate plea for survival, Victoria calls out to Lilly, but as Mama and Lilly leap together into the abyss, they transform into a beautiful storm of butterflies, leaving Victoria with a bittersweet realization that one of them might very well be Lilly, hauntingly connecting her to the past.

The man, who is Victoria and Lilly's father, kills his business partners and estranged ex-wife due to desperate and tragic circumstances. While the specific reasons aren't fully detailed, he is described as desperate and driven to extreme actions, setting the dark chain of events in motion. He then flees with his daughters, planning to end their lives as well, though Mama intervenes before he can do so.

Who is Mama in the movie Mama

Mama is a supernatural entity who was once a patient at an 1800s asylum. Her tragic backstory reveals she gave birth to a baby girl named Lily, but after a series of harrowing events, she lost her child. Overwhelmed by grief and despair, she leapt off a cliff to her death. As a ghost, she now seeks connection with abandoned children who remind her of her lost offspring, becoming the protective yet dangerous figure that haunts Victoria and Lilly.

Foreshadowing: The ominous black butterflies and electrical disturbances that appear throughout the film hint at Mama's supernatural presence long before her history is revealed.

Q3

Why does Mama want Victoria and Lilly

Mama is drawn to Victoria and Lilly because they represent the children she lost. After her own baby Lily was taken from her at the asylum, she saw her own lost child in the abandoned girls. Mama's attachment is rooted in maternal grief and a desperate need to reconnect with what she lost, making her both protective of the children and dangerous to anyone she sees as a threat to them.

Foreshadowing: The children's accounts and Annabel's dreams gradually reveal Mama's fixation on them specifically, hinting at a deeper supernatural connection.

Q4

How did Victoria and Lilly survive alone in the woods for 5 years

Victoria and Lilly survived by adapting to wilderness life, becoming feral and animalistic. Victoria, as the older sister, took on a protective role over infant Lilly, using survival instincts to find food and shelter in the abandoned cabin. They avoided contact with the outside world, which allowed them to remain hidden until Lucas and Annabel found them. Their wild behavior upon discovery suggests they lived much like animals, relying on primal survival skills.

Foreshadowing: When found, Victoria instinctively protects Lilly from the intruders, demonstrating the strong survival bond developed over years in isolation.

Q5

Why is Lilly more connected to Mama than Victoria is

Lilly, having been an infant when they were abandoned, has no memory of human civilization and views Mama as her maternal figure. Victoria, being older, remembers her real mother and maintains more distance from the supernatural entity. This difference creates a dynamic where Lilly becomes increasingly loyal to Mama while Victoria struggles to break free from her influence. Mama also favors Lilly because she represents the lost child she can reshape as her own, making Lilly the stronger spiritual anchor.

Foreshadowing: Throughout the film, Lilly's behavior shows deeper attachment to Mama, while Victoria oscillates between fear and resistance.

Q6

What happens to Dr. Dreyfuss in Mama

Dr. Dreyfuss, the psychiatrist caring for Victoria and Lilly, discovers unsettling truths about Mama's history while researching the asylum where she was once a patient. His quest for understanding leads him to encounter Mama directly, and he meets a gruesome death at her hands. His research materials later become crucial for Annabel to uncover the truth about the supernatural entity threatening the family.

Foreshadowing: Dr. Dreyfuss's increasing obsession with Mama's past parallels his own fate, as his research draws him closer to the dangerous truth.

Q7

What do the black butterflies represent in Mama

The black butterflies serve as a visual manifestation of Mama's presence and her connection to the afterlife. They appear repeatedly throughout the film as omens of her arrival and manifestations of her grief. In the finale, when Mama and Lilly leap from the cliff, they transform into a beautiful storm of butterflies, symbolizing their transcendence and the bittersweet resolution of Mama's spiritual journey. The butterflies represent both the dark, haunting nature of her presence and the freedom she finds in death.

Foreshadowing: Black butterflies consistently appear before Mama's manifestations, establishing them as her spiritual signature throughout the narrative.

Q8

What happens at the end of Mama at the cliff

In the climax, Annabel and Lucas are led to a cliff that mirrors the location where Mama died. As Mama rushes toward her baby's remains buried there, her form temporarily becomes more human. In a tragic moment, Mama believes that reunion with her child lies in death. She takes Lilly and jumps off the cliff together. However, instead of dying, they transform into butterflies, ascending as a beautiful storm and finding peace. Victoria is left behind, forced to watch as her sister chooses to go with Mama, leaving her with a haunting realization that one of the butterflies might be Lilly herself.

Foreshadowing: The cliff location echoes Mama's original death and foreshadows the cyclical nature of the tragedy.

Q9

Why does Mama jump off the cliff with Lilly

Mama jumps off the cliff with Lilly because she believes death is the only way to reunite with her lost child. Having suffered the trauma of losing Lily at the asylum centuries ago, Mama's grief has twisted her understanding of motherhood. When she discovers her baby's remains at the cliff, she sees the leap as a passage to finally be with her child again. Lilly, who has formed a stronger maternal bond with Mama than with her own sister, chooses to go with her, making the jump an act of what Lilly believes is love and belonging.

Foreshadowing: This moment is foreshadowed throughout the film as Mama's obsession with the children grows increasingly possessive and dangerous.

Q10

Why is Victoria left alone at the end of Mama

Victoria is left alone because she chooses to survive rather than jump with Mama and Lilly. When Mama calls for her to come, Victoria hesitates and ultimately chooses life. This decision represents Victoria breaking free from the supernatural bond that has haunted her family. However, the ending is bittersweet as she must now live with the loss of her sister and the haunting knowledge that either the butterfly representing Lilly will always be with her, or that she abandoned her sister to a fate she couldn't understand.

Foreshadowing: Victoria's struggle throughout the film between escaping Mama's influence and protecting Lilly foreshadows this final choice between life and the supernatural bond.

Q11

How does Mama put Lucas into a coma

Mama attacks Lucas after he discovers the truth about her history. Using her supernatural powers, she interferes with his body and mind, pushing him into a coma. This attack occurs as Mama becomes more aggressive in protecting the children from anyone she perceives as a threat. The coma removes Lucas as an obstacle in Mama's plans, forcing Annabel to take on the protective role for Victoria and Lilly while dealing with the supernatural threat alone.

Foreshadowing: Mama's increasing aggression toward Lucas coincides with his growing understanding of her true nature.

Q12

Why does the aunt think Annabel is abusing the children

The children's aunt becomes suspicious of Annabel because she witnesses the strange and frightening behavior of the girls without understanding the supernatural causes. She sees Victoria's wild reactions and the unexplained events in the household, concluding that Annabel must be mistreating them. Her concerns lead to increased surveillance of the household, though she remains unaware of the true supernatural threats the family faces. This subplot adds to the tension and isolation Annabel experiences while dealing with Mama.

Foreshadowing: The aunt's suspicions create additional conflict and pressure on Annabel during the most dangerous phases of Mama's haunting.
