Marquis de Sade is imprisoned on multiple charges: allegedly defecating on a cross and being accused of raping and impregnating Justine, a bovine. However, these charges are politically motivated, as the real rapist is the King of France himself, and the conspiracy to hide this truth drives much of the film's court intrigue.
