What Happens at the End of Malevolent?

How Malevolent (2018) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The ending of Malevolent reveals that everything they believed about the ghosts and the haunted house was intertwined with dark secrets. Mrs. Green, who seemed like the victim of poltergeist activity, was actually the real murderer of the young girls all those years ago. She killed them to keep her house quiet and in order, sewing their mouths shut to silence their screams. She hired the scam artists, the Sayers siblings, hoping they would scare off the ghosts she herself had created, but when they realized she was the culprit, she turned violent and attacked them.

As the ghostly tormentors revealed their true purpose, Angela discovered that they were not malicious spirits but rather victims trying to expose Mrs. Green's brutal crimes. The ghosts of the girls were trying to communicate the truth, and Angela’s psychic abilities allowed her to see and hear them in a way no one else could. Tragically, during their ordeal, Angela’s brother Jackson was killed, and Angela herself was captured by Herman, Mrs. Green’s son, who took her to the shed. Eliot eventually intervened, killing Herman, and Angela was able to confront Mrs. Green herself, ultimately stabbing her to stop her once and for all.

In the final moments, Angela believes she has defeated the evil, but the film leaves an open-ended question. As she sits in the hospital recovering, she notices a shadow over her and recognizes a ghost. Most viewers interpret this as her mother, the one person she thought could see and communicate with the dead, finally visiting her. This suggests that Angela’s psychic gift is real and ongoing, and her connection with the spirits—especially her mother—is now a permanent part of her life. It’s a poignant ending, hinting that even after confronting and overcoming her trauma, Angela will never be truly free from the spirits that surround her. The ghost’s presence leaves a chilling reminder that the supernatural world remains ever close, and Angela’s journey is far from over.
