Jennifer Pailey, portrayed by Joanna Going, decides to invite her younger sister, Lisa Pailey, played by Rose McGowan, to visit their hometown of Snowfield, Colorado. As an M.D., Jennifer has grown increasingly worried about Lisa’s well-being while living in Los Angeles with their alcoholic mother and associating with questionable individuals. Snowfield, a quaint former mining town now turned into a tourist haven, promises a fresh start, clean air, and a chance for Lisa to figure out her future away from the turbulent life she’s been leading.

On a chilly autumn afternoon, the sisters arrive to find the town eerily quiet. The tourist season has passed, and they encounter no signs of the 400 locals who reside there year-round. When they reach Jenny’s home and office, they are confronted with a horrifying sight: Hilda, Jenny’s housekeeper, lifeless in the kitchen, her face frozen in terror and bruised all over. To make matters worse, the phone lines are dead, and unsettling noises echo from upstairs, prompting the sisters to head to the deputy sheriff’s office for help.

Their escape plan quickly unravels when Jenny’s Jeep refuses to start, forcing them to walk to the deputy’s office as night falls. Here, they discover Deputy Henderson, played by Larry Odien, has met a similar fate as Hilda. His body bears the same ominous signs of struggle, with multiple gunshots fired yet no signs of a perpetrator. To defend themselves, Jenny retrieves a shotgun from the deputy’s gun rack, and she and Lisa head to the bakery, believing that Jacob and Anna, the owners who live above, may be safe.

Upon arriving, they find the bakery locked, and the atmosphere is filled with tension as they sense they are being watched. They sneak in through the back and are horrified to find two severed hands still gripping a rolling pin on the counter. A timer blaring from the oven reveals only baked cake layers, until the heads of Jacob and Anna drop from above onto the pastries—an absolute nightmare.

As they move cautiously, the phone interrupts silence with an eerie whisper that chills them to the bone. Suddenly, they are confronted by Sheriff Bryce Hammond, played by Ben Affleck, and two deputies. They venture back to the deputy’s office, but as they exit the bakery, a cacophony of alarm bells erupts throughout Snowfield before falling silent, leaving only the Candleglow Inn’s lights flickering in the darkness.

Curious, they find the inn’s guest book revealing only four occupants while faint Patsy Cline music fills the air. Deeper investigation leads Sheriff Bryce to find disturbing revelations that tie directly to the nightmarish happenings—they uncover a mere glimpse of the grotesque truth as they examine the strange collecting of metallic objects resembling trophies of past victims.

Things spiral further into chaos when they hear a desperate scream outside. Rushing out to aid, they witness the threatening disappearance of Deputy Steve, leaving nothing but his empty shoes behind. Back at the deputy’s office, the remaining group bands together in preparation for an unknown threat, all while eerie mechanical disturbances fray their nerves.

Meanwhile, in New York, Dr. Timothy Flyte, played by Peter O’Toole, toils late at his job at a tabloid and is unexpectedly summoned by FBI agents for a matter of national security. As he and a specialized response team head towards Snowfield, underlying theories of an Ancient Enemy lurk in the shadows, building up to a harrowing exploration of humanity’s hidden fears.

As tensions mount, the team faces inexplicable horrors, and Dr. Flyte divulges a chilling theory about something ancient and sinister lurking beneath the earth, suggesting a link to catastrophic disappearances throughout history. This narrative escalates as chaos engulfs Snowfield and the characters confront terrifying manifestations that challenge their grasp on reality.

The climax unfolds in terrifying moments as they engage in a desperate struggle against the Entity that threatens to consume them all, leading to a confrontation that tests their wits, resolve, and survival instincts. The ominous presence forces them to become unlikely heroes battling not just for their lives but for the very essence of humanity against a monstrous adversary that sees them merely as an extension of its own dark will—a horrifying master of disguise and manipulation with unfathomable power.

In a dramatic turn of events, Dr. Flyte inevitably faces the chilling reality of what the Entity truly embodies, culminating in a darkly ironic conclusion that suggests the threat may never truly vanish but instead lives on in silence, forever a shadow over mankind’s existence. As life resumes its appearances in the outside world, chilling whispers echo—a somber reminder of the misdeeds lurking close to home, leaving our protagonists questioning reality, and ultimately, their understanding of what it means to be human.
