Physicist Dr. Lionel Barrett, drawn by an intriguing proposition, finds himself at the notorious Belasco House, a mansion notorious for its haunting reputation as “the Mount Everest of haunted houses.” His invitation comes from the enigmatic millionaire Rudolph Deutsch, beckoning Barrett to explore the unsettling mysteries of the afterlife. The property, once the domain of the reclusive and depraved Emeric Belasco, is marred by a gruesome history, marked by a violent tragedy that resulted in the owner’s disappearance.

Accompanying Barrett on this daunting venture are his wife, Ann, the gifted medium Florence Tanner, who serves as a spiritualist minister, and Benjamin Franklin “Ben” Fischer, a physical medium and the sole survivor of a disastrous investigation two decades earlier. Their arrival at the haunted mansion occurs precisely seven days before Christmas Eve, a time when Barrett’s rational skepticism clashes with Tanner’s fervent belief in “surviving personalities”—spirits that linger after death. Armed with his innovative machine, Barrett seeks to neutralize the supernatural energy that envelops the estate.

As the group settles in, Tanner starts to demonstrate unexplainable physical phenomena. Barrett grows cautious, suspecting that she might be channeling the house’s potent energies. Meanwhile, Fischer retains his stoic demeanor, primarily motivated by the hefty payment awaiting him at the end of their investigation, remaining impervious to the mansion’s arcane influence.

In the midst of their haunting journey, Ann begins to experience vivid erotic visions that reveal cracks in her tumultuous marriage. One haunting night, entranced and seeking physical intimacy, she approaches Fischer in a trance-like state, only to be jolted back to reality by the encounter. Embarrassed and ashamed, she retreats to her usual self, but her struggles with the grip of the house do not cease.

Following a night of indulgence, Ann falls under the mansion’s spell yet again, this time obsessively pursuing Fischer. Just as Barrett arrives to confront the situation, Ann snaps out of her trance. Tensions rise between Barrett and Fischer, with Barrett dismissing Fischer’s concerns, unaware of how deeply the house is influencing Ann. As the specters of the past stir in the shadows, Fischer’s psychic defenses begin to crack under the pressure of the malevolence lurking in the walls.

While Tanner delves further into the enigma of Belasco House, she becomes convinced that one of the lingering spirits is Daniel, Belasco’s tormented son. Driven by an unyielding desire to unveil the truth, she pushes past conventional boundaries. Her pursuit leads to a profoundly disturbing discovery: a human skeleton, bound and hidden behind a wall, which she identifies as Daniel’s remains. In a hauntingly poignant ritual, she attempts to lay him to rest, but the dark energy of Daniel continues to turn against her. She faces a barrage of bizarre experiences, including attacks from a possessed feline, leading Barrett to suspect that Tanner is engaging in self-destructive behavior to connect with this tortured spirit.

In a desperate culmination of events, Tanner resolves to exorcise the entity from her. The intense confrontation leads to a brutal struggle for her very essence, leaving her ravaged and weakened. Following her demise, strands of mystery deepen as Barrett activates his machine in an attempt to vanquish the malevolent forces plaguing the house. However, despite initial efficacy, violent psychic activity resurfaces, culminating in Barrett facing a grisly end.

Remaining undeterred by the horror surrounding him, Fischer adopts a brave stance to confront the heart of the matter, joined by Ann as they seek to unravel the truth behind the hauntings. Together, they decode Tanner’s dying message, only to uncover the horrifying truth: Belasco, the mastermind behind the spectral manifestations, has been deceiving them with a guise of multiple personalities. Fischer confronts Belasco head-on, mocking him as objects within the house hurl themselves at him in retaliation.

In a jaw-dropping revelation, the atmosphere shifts dramatically when a stained-glass partition shatters, unveiling a hidden door leading them to a lead-lined chamber. Within, they discover Belasco’s preserved body, seated with an air of morbid mystery. Fischer’s grotesque curiosity prompts him to expose Belasco’s final secret—prosthetic legs that reveal the extent of his physical limitations. This discovery shatters the long-held illusions of Belasco’s fearsome visage.

As the energy surrounding Belasco stabilizes, Fischer takes a bold initiative to reactivate Barrett’s mystical device, teaming up with Ann to ensure a peaceful departure for Belasco’s tortured soul. Together, they prepare to guide the troubled spirit into the great unknown, buoyed by the spectral support of Barrett and Tanner, as they embark on this timeless journey through the haunting possibilities that lie ahead, navigating the uncertain expanse with a newfound sense of responsibility and resolve.
