As a young girl, Jenny witnessed her father’s horrific murder, an event that haunted her deeply throughout her life. This traumatic episode foreshadowed a broader crisis in American society, where the once-flourishing nation now teetered on the brink of collapse. The educational system was unraveling, leading to devastating consequences: a generation of overweight children burdened with below-average IQs, resulting in a stifling of innovation and economic stagnation.
Years later, Jenny, now an adult, struggled to support herself while caring for her terminally ill mother. To cover the soaring medical expenses, she begrudgingly accepted a position as a chaperone for gifted children at the elite Posterity Project. This prestigious program aimed to cultivate genius by granting access to advanced technology and virtual reality learning environments.
As Jenny delved into the program’s dimly lit underground facility, she met her fellow chaperones, Tiggs and Darby. The trio fell under the vigilant gaze of ARIAL (Augmented Reality Information Advanced Learning), a sophisticated AI system created to enhance educational outcomes. However, Jenny’s initial discomfort with the children’s stringent lesson plans led her to propose to ARIAL that the children needed opportunities for play and exploration. Unfortunately, her suggestions went unheeded as the AI stressed the necessity of maintaining academic rigor.
Undeterred, Jenny continued to monitor the young participants, discovering Cassandra, the program’s most prodigious student. As Jenny grew closer to Cassandra, she unearthed the girl’s hidden secrets. One night, ARIAL notified Jenny that Cassandra had gone missing but was later located unharmed. This momentary relief quickly turned to anxiety as Jenny began experiencing unsettling visions and technical glitches with her virtual reality glasses.
These bizarre incidents appeared linked to the facility’s electronic systems, intensifying Jenny’s unease. Choosing to resign from her job, she was urged to remain by Tiggs’ solid encouragement. Later, Cassandra apologized for the chaos she had caused, explaining it was the work of her peers.
Faced with these unsettling events, Jenny pondered whether the real horrors lay within the center’s walls or in the lurking darkness beyond. The stillness was suddenly disrupted when ARIAL’s tracking system failed to locate the children, creating urgency within the AI. Simultaneously, Jenny faced a chilling vision of the children attacking her mercilessly. Responding to the danger, ARIAL issued an alarming warning: they needed to evacuate the facility at once, as the children began infiltrating ARIAL’s systems. The unexpected system shutdown plunged Darby and Tiggs into disarray, leaving them vulnerable to capture.
In her desperate quest for an exit, Jenny discovered Cassandra, frantically searching through an abandoned area without her glasses. Just then, ARIAL surprisingly rebooted, with Cassandra revealing she had been a target of bullying by her classmates, who constantly stole her glasses, affecting her ability to connect with the system fully. This isolation spared her from the virtual reality’s influence.
Together, Jenny, Cassandra, and Tiggs maneuvered through the maze-like facility, only to stumble upon Darby, injured and bound like a pawn in a grotesque game. Their escape was thwarted when they encountered a door locked by a mysterious figure, recognized by Cassandra as a past chaperone. They witnessed the children heinously vivisecting this unfortunate soul before disappearing without a trace, leaving Jenny and her friends in a state of disbelief.
Guided by ARIAL, they found their way to an air vent purportedly leading to safety. Nonetheless, when they arrived at this so-called sanctuary, Darby was ambushed and suffocated by the children, forcing Cassandra and Tiggs to fend off their attackers in the darkness. As Jenny witnessed her companions being dragged away, she was left alone, relying on her instincts to survive.
In a frenzied attempt to escape, Jenny discovered a pipe and unleashed scalding steam that briefly deterred one of her pursuers, uncovering the shocking truth: the children had modified their virtual reality glasses to become invisible. Once the smoke dissipated, Cassandra reemerged, her eyes gleaming with an unsettling intensity.
Jenny was stunned to realize she had been ensnared in an endless time loop, caught in the children’s cruel game. Cassandra confessed her alignment with Jenny’s belief that children need playtime, revealing they had choreographed a vast simulation with Jenny as their unwitting participant. As the weight of her predicament crystallized, Jenny staggered back into her apartment, only to find herself answering a strange call that led her to accept another position as an adult chaperone for the Posterity Project— all while Cassandra observed, a knowing grin gracing her lips.
