Malamaal Weekly

In Laholi, drought-stricken villagers mortgage their possessions to the local Thakurani. The Malaamal Weekly lottery becomes a faint beacon of hope for many. Lilaram, the village's educated go-between, profits whenever a winner is declared.

Lilaram reads the winning numbers and learns the top prize is one crore. He devises a scheme to claim the ticket for himself and arranges a dinner financed by mortgaging his wife’s pet goat Gattu to the Thakurani. He invites all lottery players, but the winner fails to appear.

Lilaram goes to Anthony’s house and finds him dead, the winning ticket clutched in his hand. The body remains stiff, complicating Lilaram’s attempt to claim the prize. Ballu Balwant arrives and discovers Lilaram standing over the body with what appears to be the murder weapon.

Lilaram reveals the truth to Ballu and convinces him to stay silent in exchange for sharing the winnings. Ballu is joined by Kanhaiya, who harbors a secret romance with Sukhmani and agrees to participate on Ballu’s promise to marry Sukhmani.

Before dying, Anthony had managed to call the lottery commission and provide the winner’s name, address, his sister, and debtors. The inspector heads to interview Anthony. To cover the deception, Ballu pretends to be the living Anthony, and the inspector seems satisfied.

Kanhaiya’s father, Chokheylal, arrives in the village and locks his son in Ballu’s barn to prevent interference. The group expands to include a solitary man named Joseph, who is introduced as another ally, while Kanhaiya’s romance with Sukhmani continues in the background.

Sukhmani attempts suicide in desperation, which shocks Ballu into reconsidering freeing Kanhaiya. By the time Ballu is ready to act, Kanhaiya has already escaped.

Gattu is sold by the Thakurani to the butchers, leaving Leela and Ballu’s wife heartbroken. The lottery scheme strains under personal costs and the widening web of deceit.

Lilaram, Ballu, Chokheylal, and Joseph manage to catch Bajey, but fail to kidnap him and end up kidnapping Joseph by mistake. Bajey is later seized by a rival gang from a neighboring village in a vendetta.

The lottery inspector arrives and is handed a draft by Ballu. A chaotic pursuit follows as Thakurani’s gang and Bajey’s posse close in to uncover the truth about Anthony’s ticket. A motorcycle crashes into the inspector’s car, sending her into the town river.

The villagers strike a bargain with the inspector, letting her go in exchange for silence. The town’s residents begin to enjoy their newfound wealth, leaving Bajey a beggar.

The film closes with the villagers reveling in their wealth and the social divide highlighted by Bajey’s beggar state. The mystery of Anthony’s ticket is resolved through the inspector’s silence, and the community’s luck seems to hang in the balance.
