Ramprasad Dashrathprasad Sharma, a chartered accountant and a gifted singer, lives with his sister Ratna and begins the search for a steady job after completing his studies. His uncle Kedar, a well-connected man, informs him about an opening at a firm run by the traditionalist Bhavani Shankar, the owner of Urmila Traders. Shankar’s rigid values—dislike of modern outfits, distaste for sports, and even a peculiar contempt for men who lack mustaches—set the tone for Sharma’s new world. On the interview day, Sharma dresses modestly in a kurta and pretends ignorance about sports, which unexpectedly impresses Shankar and earns him the job.
A few days into the new role, Sharma fakes a family crisis to get a day off to attend a hockey match, claiming his long-dead mother is ill. Ironically, Shankar, who secretly enjoys sports, shows up at the same game and spots the man he believes is Sharma. When confronted, Sharma doubles down, saying it was his clean-shaven twin brother, Lakshmanprasad—also known as Lucky—a popular singer, who was at the match. The move works, and Bhavani Shankar buys the elaborate lie.
The ruse takes another turn when Bhavani Shankar calls in Lucky to teach music to his daughter, Urmila. To balance the lie, Sharma enlists the help of his loyal friend Deven, and, with a quick shave and a new, more confident persona, he begins living as Lucky—an urbane, easygoing foil to his former self. Urmila is instantly attracted to this new image, complicating Sharma’s carefully laid plan.
As the deception spirals, Bhavani Shankar grows eager to meet Sharma’s mother. Facing a practical snag, Sharma enlists Kamala Srivastava, a socialite portrayed by Kamala Srivastava, to stand in as his mother during the meeting. The plan seems to work, but Kamala soon faces a similar predicament when Shankar attends a party she’s at and recognizes her; she, too, fabricates that she has a twin sister, creating further confusion for the man.
Meanwhile, Shankar notices Urmila’s fondness for Lucky and muses that Urmila should marry Ramprasad instead, whom he views as a more suitable match—an idea that unsettles Urmila. This tug-of-war forces Sharma to reveal the truth to Urmila and accept the necessity of dropping his Lucky persona. The couple then inform Shankar that Lucky ran away, and Urmila agrees to wed Ramprasad. Yet Shankar’s suspicions flare again when he spots Sharma’s fake mustache and concludes that Lucky killed and impersonated Ramprasad in order to marry Urmila.
A tense chase follows, with Shankar pursuing the pair in his car before he’s briefly arrested. Once released, he discovers that the two are now married and refuses to bless the union until Kedar and Deven explain the full situation. In the end, Shankar concedes and even shaves his own mustache, accepting the unconventional arrangement and the couple’s happiness.
