Kevin Carson grows up in the projects with his grandmother and works at Foot Locker, dreaming of one day designing his own sneaker line. His best friends stand behind him: Benny and Stacie, who share his ambitions and keep him grounded as he navigates life around their tough neighborhood. The community is obsessed with the Mondo Million Dollar Lottery, a $370 million prize that many hope will change everything.
At Foot Locker, a remorseless paroled thief named Lorenzo tries to coerce Kevin into giving away three sets of sneakers for free—an act that spirals into chaos when Lorenzo grabs the shoes, alarms sound, and the police arrive. Lorenzo is arrested for shoplifting, and Kevin loses his job in the fallout, left trying to steady the fragile balance between his dreams and the street-level pressure around him.
On his walk home, Kevin decides to play the lottery, buying a Mondo Millionaire ticket using his grandmother’s lucky numbers while also grabbing a ticket for himself based on a fortune cookie fortune. Benny fills in the gaps of the neighborhood grapevine, telling Kevin that everyone believes he snitched on Lorenzo, leaving Kevin feeling isolated and misunderstood. The blow lands hard, and Kevin returns to his grandmother’s home feeling defeated.
The lottery numbers are finally announced: Grandma’s ticket comes up empty, but Kevin’s ticket hits for an enormous $370 million. The celebration is cut short, however, as the claims office is closed for the Fourth of July weekend, forcing a three-day delay before Kevin can claim his winnings. Word travels fast, and the whole block swarms his home, seeking a share of the windfall. Nikki Swayze, a woman who had previously rejected Kevin, reappears with a new, complicated interest in him, drawing attention and envy in equal measure.
Stacie warns Kevin that Nikki is after his money, but Kevin struggles to see through the deception. Soon, the demand for repayment arrives in the form of a high-stakes loan from a street loan shark named Sweet Tee, who provides Kevin with a $100,000 loan to fund a carefree spree. After a date with Nikki, she schemes to get him to father a child to secure her financial claim, revealing a calculated plan to take half of his fortune. Kevin leaves the situation shaken and angry, unsure whom to trust.
A mysterious encounter follows—a man calls to him from a basement window, and Kevin meets Mr. Washington, a retired boxer who invites him to his home and offers a different kind of counsel and perspective. The next day, Kevin attends church with his grandmother, hoping for guidance, but Benny interrupts with news that Lorenzo is actively hunting for him and the ticket. Lorenzo and his crew close in, and a tense confrontation unfolds at the church. Sweet Tee’s bodyguard intervenes, saving Kevin with his gun, but Lorenzo’s brute strength prevails for the moment, breaking Kevin’s hand in a brutal showdown. Kevin bolts toward the train station with Lorenzo and his gang in pursuit, leaping onto a train that rumbles away while Lorenzo stays on the platform, furious and empty-handed.
Back home, Kevin and Benny argue over the fate of the winning ticket; Benny’s offer to let Kevin keep the ticket if Lorenzo never gets it drives a wedge between them. Kevin seeks solace at Stacie’s house, where she expresses that she believes in him, even as her mother arrives and complicates matters. Lorenzo later intercepts Kevin outside, knocks him unconscious, and steals both his sneakers and the precious ticket. When Kevin wakes, he finds himself in Mr. Washington’s apartment, where a plan begins to take shape: they’ll convince Lorenzo that the ticket is fake, hoping to buy time and space to regroup. The neighborhood stages a block party, and Kevin learns that Sweet Tee plans to punish him if the debt isn’t repaid.
Lorenzo eventually returns to confront Kevin, injuring Sweet Tee and forcing Kevin to surrender the ticket under threat of violence. In a dramatic turn, Mr. Washington appears from behind and knocks Lorenzo unconscious, turning the crowd’s perception of the moment into one of relief and triumph. Benny pushes Kevin to sign the back of the ticket, sealing the way forward.
Months later, Kevin channels his luck and talent into a real business. He launches a sneaker company with Benny as CEO and Stacie as his attorney and partner, hinting at a future where their community can rise with them. Kevin appears to have repaid Sweet Tee and uses his platform to give back by opening a park, with Mr. Washington serving as head of security and a foundation that funds local businesses and scholarships. After delivering a speech to the neighborhood, Kevin, Benny, and Stacie board a helicopter and rise toward a new horizon, signaling a hopeful end to a dangerous, transformative chapter.
