Holly Parker, Lana Turner, a lower-class shopgirl from San Francisco, marries into the wealthy Anderson family of Fairfield, Connecticut. Her husband, Clay Anderson, John Forsythe, is a diplomat with grand political ambitions, while his mother Estelle Anderson, Constance Bennett, keeps a stern eye on Holly and looks down on her every move. As Clay’s long, frequent assignments abroad keep the family apart, Holly finds herself increasingly isolated. In a moment of loneliness, she begins a relationship with Phil Benton, Ricardo Montalban, a famous playboy. When Clay suddenly returns and announces a promotion that would take them to Washington, Holly agrees to end the affair so they can start a real family life with their young son, Clay Jr. But Phil, reluctant to let go, tries to force her to stay, and in the ensuing struggle tumbles down a staircase and dies. Holly panics and leaves the scene, while Estelle—who has kept tabs on everything—uses Phil’s death to tighten her grip, hiring a detective to follow Holly and then blackmail her into faking her own death and vanishing to Europe under a false identity rather than face murder charges. Estelle arranges for Holly to be spirited away from the family yacht at night, effectively severing Holly from her husband and son.

Holly’s heartbreak deepens when she learns she lost more than her liberty: she loses her son to a life apart from her, and she sinks into illness and despair. On Christmas Eve, while in Denmark, she contracts pneumonia and is rescued by a charming pianist, Christian Torben, John Van Dreelen, who helps her receive medical care and recover under a nurse’s watchful eye. As she travels with him on tour, a bond grows, and Christian eventually proposes marriage. Holly, though touched, refuses and ultimately steps away from the relationship, a choice that accelerates her slide into depravity and alcoholism, including a bitter one-night stand with a man who later steals her money and jewelry.

With Estelle’s blackmail payments ending, Holly moves to Mexico, where she rents a shabby apartment and struggles to make ends meet. She befriends an American neighbor, Dan Sullivan, Burgess Meredith, who cushions her with drinks and vague generosity. On a drunken Christmas Eve, she reveals her past to Dan, and he lures her to New York under the pretense of work—only to reveal his true plan: to use her to entangle Governor Clayton, now a rising political star and candidate for his party’s presidential nomination. When Dan threatens to expose her deception, Holly shoots and kills him. Arrested, she refuses to reveal her identity and signs a confession with the letter ‘X’ rather than her real name. The court-appointed defense attorney happens to be her son, Clay Jr., Keir Dullea, though she does not recognize him at first.

During the trial, Clay, still unaware that the defendant is his mother, crafts a defense that casts Sullivan as a career criminal who brought about his own downfall. As the prosecutor delivers his summation, he finally reveals that Holly is the governor’s wife and that Clay is the governor’s son, a revelation that jolts the courtroom and shocks Holly into the realization that her attorney is the son she thought she had lost. She then takes the stand, choosing to tell the truth in a final, heartrending admission: she killed Sullivan to shield her son, who believes she is dead and has only ever known her as a specter of danger. In her closing moments, she reaches out to her son in spirit, though she never reveals her true identity to him. As Clay, moved by the unexpected connection they shared, visits her in her holding cell and pleads for emotional reconciliation, Holly remains steadfast and silent. Then, overwhelmed by the strain and emotion of the moment, she dies. Clay walks away with a painful truth: his mother’s love, complicated and hidden, had finally found him in the shadows of her life.
