The newest and greatest all‑talking motion picture follows a young, unfaithful wife and mother who is cast out by her cold, unforgiving husband, the Attorney General of France. Forbidden from seeing her three‑year‑old son, she spends years in exile, seeking refuge abroad and in absinthe. Ultimately, her son—now a promising lawyer—unknowingly defends her in court. Ruth Chatterton delivers a marvelous performance as Madame X in this early talkie.
