In the bustling heart of New York City, aspiring magician Hector P. Valenti faces repeated rejections from a national talent show. His dreams of stardom seem to fade as he encounters yet another unsuccessful audition, further intensifying his struggles.

After his failed audition, Hector stumbles upon an exotic pet store where he discovers an extraordinary singing baby crocodile. He names the crocodile Lyle and believes this remarkable find is the key to achieving fame and fortune.

Determined to showcase Lyle's talent, Hector takes a bold financial risk by putting his magnificent three-story Victorian brownstone house as collateral for their upcoming performance. This decision reflects his desperation and ambition to succeed.

During the critical moment of their performance, Lyle suffers from an overwhelming case of stage fright. Consequently, Hector loses both the spotlight and the family home, marking a devastating setback for his dreams.

Eighteen months later, the Primms family, consisting of Mr. Primm, Mrs. Primm, and their son Josh, move into Hector's former home. Josh struggles to acclimate to his new surroundings and experiences anxiety about starting over.
