In the heart of Louisiana’s countryside, Kermit the Frog begins narrating an adventurous and whimsical tale featuring a cast of charming animal characters. The story kicks off with Mordecai Sledge and Leroy the Donkey, who are seen approaching their home after a mischievous attempt to steal items from a railroad yard. Upon arriving, Mordecai discovers that the crates contain musical instruments rather than valuable loot, leading him to harshly blame Leroy for the apparent worthless haul. Frustrated and angry, Mordecai scolds Leroy before going inside to retrieve his shotgun with the intention of “retiring” the donkey. Startled by the sudden discharge of the gun, Leroy swiftly runs away, escaping into the countryside with a tuba that Mordecai had previously thrown into a tree, wrapping around the donkey’s neck as he fled.

As Leroy makes his escape, he encounters Kermit the Frog, who influences him to pick up the tuba and start playing. The cheerful music sparks a newfound passion in Leroy, inspiring him to become a traveling musician. Shortly thereafter, on his farm, Farmer Lardpork approaches T.R. the Rooster and informs him that he has outlived his usefulness and plans to have him for dinner. T.R., sensing danger, flees from the farmer and finds refuge in a hayfield, where Leroy, hearing the commotion, finds him hiding. Leroy shares his own story of being mistreated and his dream of making music, which motivates T.R. to join him, bringing along his banjo. The two animals form an unlikely duo, and T.R. plans to leave his optimistic chickens behind, but when Lardpork finds him again, Leroy’s loud tuba playing startles the chickens and causes T.R. to escape once more.

Continuing their journey, Leroy and T.R. come across Rover Joe, the Hound Dog, who introduces himself with a heartfelt recount of how his owner, Mean Floyd, once threw him out of a window after mistaking him for a ghost. In a display of camaraderie and mutual understanding, Rover Joe joins the duo, bringing his trombone to the group. As they travel, the animals find themselves passing through a graveyard, where they encounter Catgut the Pussycat resting on a tombstone. Initially, she is hesitant to join, feeling disillusioned and full of blues, having been abandoned by her owner Caleb Siles after thirteen years because of her friendship with rats. However, her soulful singing reveals her own story of rejection and resilience, and she is inspired to join the band, playing the trumpet.

That night, the animal musicians rest in a swamp, but their peaceful sleep is interrupted when they notice a faint light from a nearby farmhouse. Leroy, brave and curious, decides to approach, mistakenly believing the farmhouse is occupied by a normal family. Instead, Leroy encounters a gang of robbers—their former owners—who are frightened by the full moon and their own fears. Mean Floyd fears “swamp demons” and “slime serpents,” Mordecai is afraid of “tree trolls,” Farmer Lardpork fears “bush bats,” and Caleb Siles worries about “mud monsters.” Leroy reports his discovery, and the animals, growing skeptical, individually approach the farmhouse. With clever plans, they surprise the robbers by bursting in and playing lively music, causing the terrified gang to flee in panic. Unknowingly, the animals chase away their former owners, who leave behind food and jewelry, which the animals decide to safeguard until the owners return.

Throughout their adventure, the animals display bravery and camaraderie, united by their love of music and their desire to protect their new-found home. The story concludes with Kermit reassuring viewers, highlighting the significance of friendship and the power of music with the simple yet heartwarming remark:

“And you know, that’s just what they did.”

This charming tale underscores themes of acceptance, resilience, and the transformative power of creativity, blending humor, adventure, and heartfelt moments in a way that appeals to audiences of all ages.
