Luna caliente

In autumn 1970, Juan, a Spanish poet working for UNESCO in Paris, returns to his hometown of Burgos for vacation, amidst the tense political climate due to the Burgos process. The city is heavily monitored by police and military forces because of the military trial against ETA members and dissidents. Juan's visit is intertwined with the ongoing political unrest and personal reflections.

Juan meets with Dr. Miniente, an old colleague and family friend who lives on the outskirts of Burgos. During dinner, Ramona, Dr. Miniente’s daughter, flirts openly with Juan, drawing his attention. The conversation reveals differing views on the political situation and personal relationships within the family.

After dinner, Juan tries to leave Dr. Miniente's house but finds himself unable to start his rental car. Encouraged by Ramona’s signals, he accepts an invitation to stay over. This moment marks the start of a pivotal and troubling event in the story.

Juan, overwhelmed and unable to sleep, goes to Ramona’s bedroom. She is receptive to him, and their interaction turns sexual, with Juan raping Ramona while her mother sleeps soundly and her father is drunk. Juan’s internal conflict and guilt start to surface, shaping his psychological state.

Juan believes he has caused Ramona harm or possibly killed her, and in a panic, he tries to leave the house. He is confronted by Dr. Miniente, who is unaware of what transpired, and drunkenly insists on going to a nearby brothel. Juan reluctantly agrees to give him a ride, leading to further complications.

During their ride to the brothel, Juan and Dr. Miniente are stopped and questioned by civil guards but are allowed to proceed. Eventually, a heated argument erupts, resulting in Juan violently hitting his intoxicated friend. Juan then drives the car to a bridge, where he pushes it over into the river, killing Dr. Miniente.

Juan hitchhikes back to his mother’s house in the early morning. Ramona searches for him, expressing her feelings and asserting that she was not harmed and is in love with him. Despite his guilt, Juan seeks to restart his life, though the emotional weight remains heavy.

Ramona openly states she does not regret her actions and remains in love with Juan, showing her complex feelings about the events. Meanwhile, Ramona’s mother is frantic, desperately trying to locate her husband, unaware of the tragic events that have unfolded.

A police inspector suspects that Dr. Miniente’s death was not accidental and launches an investigation. Juan becomes the prime suspect and is subjected to intense interrogation. Ramona steps in to provide an alibi, saving Juan from immediate arrest.

Juan’s sister, involved with the clandestine Communist opposition, manages to obtain secret images of the Burgos process. She seeks to hide this evidence and escape Spain, connecting her personal struggles to the wider political repression of the era.
