What Happens in Luka Chuppi: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Luka Chuppi (2019) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Vishnu Trivedi, Vinay Pathak is a faltering politician in the small town of Mathura who campaigns to ban live-in relationships, viewing them as a stain on Indian traditional culture. At the same time, his party targets film star Nazeem Khan, Abhinav Shukla who is alleged to be in a live-in relationship with his girlfriend, fueling Vishnu's ongoing grudge against modern relationships.

Rashmi Trivedi begins an internship at a local news channel and teams up with the channel's star reporter Kartik Aaryan as Vinod "Guddu" Shukla, and his best friend, Aparshakti Khurana as Abbas Sheikh. Guddu and Rashmi fall in love, and Guddu proposes, but Rashmi is not ready for marriage and suggests a live-in. He, more traditional and wary of Vishnu's reaction, hesitates. As a compromise, Abbas suggests trying a live-in during their 20-day business trip to Gwalior, and the couple agrees.

They rent an apartment in a conservative area by pretending to be a married couple. As they grow closer, they consummate their relationship. Their nosy neighbour, Mrs. Shrivastava, Sapna Sand, grows suspicious when she spots them. To complicate matters, they give mixed answers about their wedding date, which only fuels her doubts.

To head off the neighborhood uproar, Guddu and Rashmi fabricate photographs and wedding mementos overnight, sidestepping Mrs. Shrivastava's plan to gather the locals the next morning. By the end of the twenty days, Guddu reaffirms his love and Rashmi accepts his marriage proposal. Before they can leave Gwalior, Guddu's relative Babulal, Pankaj Tripathi, spots them together, tails them, and sees the wedding pictures, jumping to the conclusion that they have eloped.

The next morning, Babulal brings Guddu's entire family to Rashmi's house and they chasten him for eloping. Realizing the family would accept a marriage but not a cohabitation, the couple does not reveal the truth. They return to Mathura to meet Rashmi's family, while Vishnu is pleased to hear that his daughter has chosen marriage over cohabitation, even warning of the harsh consequences if they had lived together.

Although they begin living like a married couple, they resent not being legally married. They make several attempts to wed in secret, but they are interrupted each time; in a last-ditch effort, they participate in a mass marriage event, only for Vishnu, as the chief guest, to catch them red-handed. Exasperated, they admit that they had been cohabiting.

Guddu then confesses to Vishnu that the main reason for his electoral loss is the elder's reluctance to change, since the majority of voters are younger and favor modernity. He convinces Vishnu to stop opposing live-in relationships, and the two eventually bless Guddu and Rashmi's marriage.

The story ends with Guddu and Rashmi reporting on a rally led by Vishnu, who is shown to have joined Nazeem Khan's election campaign.

Why does Vishnu campaign against live-in relationships?

Vishnu Trivedi is a politician who views live-in relationships as a threat to traditional Indian culture. He launches an anti-live-in campaign to appeal to conservative voters and strengthen his political standing in Mathura. His party also targets film star Nazeem Khan, who is rumored to be in a live-in relationship, fueling Vishnu's public crusade against modern relationships.

Q2

Why does Guddu hesitate about the live-in arrangement?

Guddu is more traditional and wary of societal judgment, especially since he works as a reporter in a small town where Vishnu's anti-live-in campaign is prominent. He fears the backlash from his family and community if word gets out that he is living with a woman outside of marriage. Rashmi eventually convinces him to try it as a compromise during their 20-day business trip to Gwalior.

Q3

How do Guddu and Rashmi hide their live-in relationship from neighbors?

Why does Babulal's discovery cause such a big problem?

He immediately brings Guddu's entire family to confront them, creating a major family crisis that forces the couple to maintain their deception.

Q5

Why don't Guddu and Rashmi reveal the truth to their families?

Vishnu, in particular, has warned about deadly consequences for anyone who lives together outside of wedlock. The couple decides it is easier to pretend they married secretly rather than admit they lived together unmarried.

Q6

What causes Vishnu to change his mind about live-in relationships?

After Guddu and Rashmi are exposed at the mass marriage event, Guddu tells Vishnu that his political loss is due to his refusal to accept modern values. He explains that younger voters prefer modernity and would not support someone who opposes live-in relationships. Q7

How does Guddu's news report relate to Vishnu's election loss?

Guddu, as a reporter, covers the political scene in Mathura and understands what issues resonate with voters. He explains to Vishnu that his rigid traditional stance, especially the anti-live-in campaign, alienated younger voters who favor modern relationship choices. This insight helps Vishnu realize he needs to adapt his political platform to win elections.

Q8

Why does Vishnu support Rashmi's marriage after initially opposing cohabitation?

Once Guddu explains that his election failure stems from being out of touch with modern values, Vishnu realizes opposing live-in relationships is politically damaging. He decides to stop his anti-live-in campaign entirely and gives his blessing to Guddu and Rashmi's marriage. This shift also helps him align with film star Nazeem Khan's election campaign.
