Mother of the Bride

After spending a year at Discovery Resorts in London, Emma Winslow (Miranda Cosgrove) is taken by surprise when her boyfriend RJ (Sean Teale) proposes to her. While she joyfully accepts, Emma can’t shake her worries about how her mother, Lana (Brooke Shields), will react, particularly since they have only each other since her father’s passing when Emma was just eight years old. To complicate matters, Emma hasn’t yet informed Lana about her relationship with RJ.

In San Francisco, Lana Winslow is a force to be reckoned with, running a medical research lab. When Emma returns home, she drops a bombshell: she plans to abandon grad school and dive into running her own business with a substantial sponsorship that entails promoting Discovery. Lana, under the impression that her daughter will be working from home, is supportive—until Emma reveals her impending wedding at a lavish resort in Phuket, Thailand, just a month away.

Despite some initial shock, Lana claims to be happy for her daughter. The wedding is being funded by Discovery in exchange for marketing the Anantara resort, providing a charitable contribution to the Ocean Institute. Eager to be an integral part of the planning, Lana is ultimately reassured by Emma, who insists that everything will go smoothly.

As the wedding date draws near, Lana travels to Thailand with her closest friend Janice (Rachael Harris), and reunites with former Stanford acquaintances, including Scott (Wilson Cruz) and Clay (Michael McDonald). They manage to piece together a piece of shocking information: RJ is the son of Will Jackson (Benjamin Bratt), who happens to be both Scott’s brother and Lana’s ex-boyfriend. The rekindled presence of Will stirs up memories for Lana, who is reminded of the heartbreak he caused her years ago.

In an awkward moment, Lana bumps into Will while he is in an unexpected state—naked, leading to a quick and mortified exit. Tensions escalate when Lana confides in Emma that her old trauma may resonate with her daughter’s relationship. Feeling protective, Emma urges her mother to release the old wounds of her past and trust that RJ is different from Will.

As the wedding preparations unfold, misunderstandings surface. Camala (Tasneem Roc), the Discovery brand manager, sidelines Lana from many wedding decisions, dictating everything from the wedding dress to the week’s itinerary, leaving Lana feeling increasingly marginalized. While Emma tries to keep the peace, the competition between her mother and Will bubbles over during a heated game of pickleball, showcasing their undeniable chemistry.

Meanwhile, Lucas Campion (Chad Michael Murray), a doctor, devotes his attention to Lana, wanting to take her out for drinks. However, the moment Emma perceives her mother’s connection with Lucas, she restricts her from getting too close to Will, hoping to avoid complications.

However, Camala’s insistence on specific wedding themes leaves Lana feeling like a mere pawn in a marketing spectacle, compelling her to join her friends instead for some rebellious fun—skinny dipping included, which leads to reprimands from the resort. Tensions run high, sparking a confrontation where Emma accuses Lana of trying to undermine the wedding, only for Lana to retaliate by stating she’s been forced to lose her essence due to the plans being handed down to her.

Feeling guilty after their fight, Emma starts realizing how exclusion has started affecting Lana. She encourages reconciliation, which leads to the two eventually coming together, and Emma asserts her right over her own wedding plans—emphasizing Lana’s desire to wear her own dress and handle her own speeches.

At the final dinner rehearsal, the atmosphere thickens when Lana overhears Will discussing something about a woman named Katrina, sending her into a spiral of uncertainty, fearing history may repeat itself. However, as events unfold, Will and Lana finally confront their past and discover the possibility of a fresh start together. In an unexpected yet beautiful twist, Will proposes once more—this time to Lana—prompting her to accept his heartfelt gesture and embrace the future ahead.
