What Happens in London: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of London (2006) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Syd, Chris Evans receives a phone call from a friend informing him that his ex-girlfriend London, Jessica Biel, is throwing a going-away party before she moves to California with a new boyfriend in a few days. Syd, who has been deeply depressed since London dumped him, is driven to anger and ends up wrecking his apartment. He crashes the party uninvited, bringing along Bateman, Jason Statham, a banker who delivers cocaine to Syd as a favor to their mutual dealer. The party takes place in a condo owned by the parents of club girl Rebecca, and the night quickly veers into a private, chaotic orbit.

Inside the party-within-a-party, Bateman and Syd hole up in the bathroom, snorting line after line of cocaine, guzzling tequila, and discussing love, sex, God, women, and pain. As the drugs pile up, Bateman pushes Syd to get on with his life and stop dwelling on the past. The private circle grows with Maya and Mallory, who pretend to be sympathetic to Syd in order to snag some free cocaine. When Syd learns that London has arrived, Bateman dares him to go and speak to her.

A heated confrontation erupts as Syd and London decide to step out and talk somewhere more private. Just as they begin to reconnect, a fight breaks out in which Syd and Bateman clash with other male guests, forcing them all to struggle their way out of the party. The tension between Syd and London softens in the quiet of Syd’s car, and they eventually have sex back at London’s apartment. The story closes with a final scene at the airport, where Syd tells London he loves her. London is moved by the confession, but she still leaves, choosing her own path forward.

Why does Syd trash his apartment after hearing about London's party?

Syd destroys his apartment because the news about London's going-away party triggers a violent emotional breakdown. He has been deeply depressed since London dumped him, and learning that she's moving to California with a new boyfriend reactivates all his suppressed anger and grief. The destructive outburst represents his inability to control or process the pain of losing her, and it propels him toward the reckless decision to crash the party.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Syd is described as having been deeply depressed since the breakup, suggesting his emotional state is already fragile.

Q2

Why does Syd crash London's party instead of being invited?

Syd crashes the party because he wasn't invited but desperately needs to see London one last time. After destroying his apartment in a fit of rage, he decides that attending the gathering, despite not being welcome, is the only way to confront her about their breakup before she leaves New York. His desperation overrides any concern for social boundaries or rejection.

Q3

Who is Bateman and why does he agree to go with Syd to the party?

Bateman is a banker who also delivers cocaine for their mutual dealer. He agrees to accompany Syd to the party because they share a mutual dependency and their dealer owes Bateman favors. Bateman's willingness to help stems from understanding Syd's pain, he himself is also seeking escape from his own problems through drugs and partying.

Q7

Why does London still leave for California despite Syd telling her he loves her?

London leaves because she has already chosen to move forward with her new life in California with her new boyfriend. While Syd's confession at the airport moves her emotionally, she prioritizes her own path forward over reuniting with him. Her decision reflects the movie's central theme that some opportunities, once lost, cannot be reclaimed simply through declaration of love.

Foreshadowing: The movie's melancholy tone and emphasis on regret and lost opportunities foreshadow that the ending will be bittersweet.

Q8

Do Syd and London get back together at the end?

Syd and London do not get back together. Despite reconnecting, having sex, and Syd declaring his love at the airport, London chooses to leave for California anyway. The ending is intentionally open and sad - Syd is left alone while London moves on with her new life, illustrating that their relationship has truly ended.

Q9

Why does Bateman tell Syd to move on and stop dwelling on the past?

Bateman pushes Syd to move on because he recognizes that clinging to the past is self-destructive. While high on cocaine in the bathroom, Bateman delivers blunt advice about getting on with life. His motivation comes from observing Syd's spiral and possibly from his own similar struggles with escapism. The moment serves as a contrast to Syd's inability to let go.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Bateman is established as someone who enables Syd's self-destructive behavior through drugs, making his sudden advice to move on somewhat paradoxical.
