Lilli Marlene, a French girl who runs her uncle’s café in Benghazi, Libya, discovers that her name is the inspiration behind the popular wartime song Lili Marleen, written for her before the war. This unusual connection draws the attention of both the British and the Germans, who see her as a powerful propaganda asset because she can sing and captivate an audience.
At one point, the Germans attempt to snatch her, but their plan fails. She goes on to perform for British troops and even participates in radio broadcasts to the United States, arranged by Steve, an American war correspondent embedded with the British Eighth Army, who soon becomes her boyfriend.
As the war unfolds, the Germans eventually succeed in kidnapping her in Cairo and transport her to Berlin. There, she is interrogated and told that she had been tortured and brainwashed by the British into thinking she was French. The Germans push to mold her into a loyal Nazi, assigning her to make English-language broadcasts for the Third Reich. Her old British friends, including Steve and Berry, are deeply disappointed by what they perceive as her betrayal.
After the fighting ends, she resurfaces in London during a large reunion of Eighth Army members. British security agents move to arrest her, but Steve and Berry escape with her in their broadcasting van. They drive to an address in London that the German colonel in charge of her broadcasts had provided for help; when they arrive, they discover the colonel actually lives there, and that he is a British intelligence officer working undercover in Berlin. He explains that Lilli was never a traitor and that her communications contained encoded messages for the British.
With the truth laid bare, the group returns to the reunion, and Lilli Marleen is cleared of suspicion. She delivers a final performance of Lili Marleen for everyone, and afterward she shares a kiss with Steve, closing a chapter marked by manipulation, loyalty, and a remarkable test of character.
